. There is a close relationship between category theory and logic. For example, elementary toposes have just enough properties to interpret intuitionistic higher-order logic, and we think of toposes as `categories of sets'. In fact, a topos with a natural numbers object is an adequate universe in which to develop intuitionistic mathematics, and such a topos may be seen as a categorical analogue of a model of intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set-theory. In this paper we implement the categorical analogue of Bernays-Godel set-theory. We introduce the notion of small structure on a category, and if small structure satises certain axioms we can think of the underlying category as a category of classes. Our axioms imply the existence of a co-variant powerset monad on the underlying category of classes, which sends a class to the class of its small subclasses. Simple xed points of this and related monads are shown to be models of intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set-theory (IZF). ...

Abstract. We introduce a new kind of models for constructive set theories based on categories of presheaves. These models are a counterpart of the presheaf models for intuitionistic set theories defined by Dana Scott in the ’80s. We also show how presheaf models fit into the framework of Algebraic Set Theory and sketch an application to an independence result. 1. Variable sets in foundations and practice Presheaves are of central importance both for the foundations and the practice of mathematics. The notion of a presheaf formalizes well the idea of a variable set, that is relevant in all the areas of mathematics concerned with the study of indexed families of objects [19]. One may then readily see how presheaves are of interest also in foundations: both Cohen’s forcing models for classical set theories and Kripke models for intuitionistic logic involve the idea of sets indexed by stages. Constructive aspects start to emerge when one considers the internal logic of categories of presheaves. This logic, which does not include classical principles such as the law of the excluded middle, provides a useful language to manipulate objects

This paper provides a unifying axiomatic account of the interpretation of recursive types that incorporates both domain-theoretic and realizability models as concrete instances. Our approach is to view such models as full subcategories of categorical models of intuitionistic set theory. It is shown that the existence of solutions to recursive domain equations depends upon the strength of the set theory. We observe that the internal set theory of an elementary topos is not strong enough to guarantee their existence. In contrast, as our first main result, we establish that solutions to recursive domain equations do exist when the category of sets is a model of full intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. We then apply this result to obtain a denotational interpretation of FPC, a recursively typed lambda-calculus with callby-value operational semantics. By exploiting the intuitionistic logic of the ambient model of intuitionistic set theory, we analyse the relationship between operational and denotational semantics. We first prove an “internal ” computational adequacy theorem: the model always believes that the operational and denotational notions of termination agree. This allows us to identify, as our second main result, a necessary and sufficient condition for genuine “external ” computational adequacy to hold, i.e. for the operational and denotational notions of termination to coincide in the real world. The condition is formulated as a simple property of the internal logic, related to the logical notion of 1-consistency. We provide useful sufficient conditions for establishing that the logical property holds in practice. Finally, we outline how the methods of the paper may be applied to concrete models of FPC. In doing so, we obtain computational adequacy results for an extensive range of realizability and domain-theoretic models.

We advocate a pragmatic approach to constructive set theory, using axioms based solely on set-theoretic principles that are directly relevant to (constructive) mathematical practice. Following this approach, we present theories ranging in power from weaker predicative theories to stronger impredicative ones. The theories we consider all have sound and complete classes of category-theoretic models, obtained by axiomatizing the structure of an ambient category of classes together with its subcategory of sets. In certain special cases, the categories of sets have independent characterizations in familiar category-theoretic terms, and one thereby obtains a rich source of naturally occurring mathematical models for (both predicative and impredicative) constructive set theories.

Abstract. In this paper the machinery and results developed in [Awodey et al, 2004] are extended to the study of constructive set theories. Specifically, we introduce two constructive set theories BCST and CST and prove that they are sound and complete with respect to models in categories with certain structure. Specifically, basic categories of classes and categories of classes are axiomatized and shown to provide models of the aforementioned set theories. Finally, models of these theories are constructed in the category of ideals. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the machinery and results developed by Awodey, Butz, Simpson and Streicher in [Awodey et al, 2004] to the predicative case. Specifically, in ibid. it was shown that:

Plotkin suggested using a polymorphic dual intuitionistic / linear type theory (PILLY) as a metalanguage for parametric polymorphism and recursion. In recent work the first two authors and R.L. Petersen have defined a notion of parametric LAPL-structure, which are models of PILLY, in which one can reason using parametricity and, for example, solve a large class of domain equations, as suggested by Plotkin. In this paper we show how an interpretation of a strict version of Bierman, Pitts and Russo’s language Lily into synthetic domain theory presented by Simpson and Rosolini gives rise to a parametric LAPL-structure. This adds to the evidence that the notion of LAPL-structure is a general notion suitable for treating many different parametric models, and it provides formal proofs of consequences of parametricity expected to hold for the interpretation. Finally, we show how these results in combination with Rosolini and Simpson’s computational adequacy result can be used to prove consequences of parametricity for Lily. In particular we show that one can solve domain equations in Lily up to ground contextual equivalence. 1

We show how to interpret the language of first-order set theory in an elementary topos endowed with, as extra structure, a directed structural system of inclusions (dssi). As our main result, we obtain a complete axiomatization of the intuitionistic set theory validated by all such interpretations. Since every elementary topos is equivalent to one carrying a dssi, we thus obtain a first-order set theory whose associated categories of sets are exactly the elementary toposes. In addition, we show that the full axiom of Separation is validated whenever the dssi is superdirected. This gives a uniform explanation for the known facts that cocomplete and realizability toposes provide models for Intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (IZF).
