Part 1 of this paper is the previously unpublished 1972 memorandum [43], with editorial changes and some minor corrections. Part 2 presents what happened next, together with some further development of the material. The first part begins with an elementary settheoretical model of the ficalculus. Functions are modeled in a similar way to that normally employed in set theory, by their graphs; difficulties are caused in this enterprise by the axiom of foundation. Next, based on that model, a model of the fijcalculus is constructed by means of a natural deduction method. Finally, a theorem is proved giving some general properties of those nontrivial models of the fijcalculus which are continuous complete lattices. The second part begins with a brief discussion of models of the calculus in set theories with antifoundation axioms. Next the model of the fi calculus of Part 1 and also the closely relatedbut different!models of Scott [53, 54] and of Engeler [21, 22] are reviewed....

We present an event structure semantics for contextual nets, an extension of P/T Petri nets where transitions can check for the presence of tokens without consuming them (readonly operations). A basic rôle is played by asymmetric event structures, a generalization of Winskel’s prime event structures where symmetric conflict is replaced by a relation modelling asymmetric conflict or weak causality, used to represent a new kind of dependency between events arising in contextual nets. Extending Winskel’s seminal work on safe nets, the truly concurrent event based semantics of contextual nets is given at categorical level via a chain of coreflections

Abstract interpretation is the name applied to a number of techniques for reasoning about programs by evaluating them over nonstandard domains whose elements denote properties over the standard domains. This thesis is concerned with higherorder functional languages and abstract interpretations with a formal semantic basis. It is known how abstract interpretation for the simply typed lambda calculus can be formalised by using binary logical relations. We relate two sequential models of PCF: the sequential algorithm model due to Berry and Curien and the strongly stable model due to Bucciarelli and the author. More precisely, we show that all the morphisms araising in the strongly stable model of PCF are sequential in the sense that they are the "extensional projections" of some sequential algorithms. We define a model of PCF where morphisms are "extensional" sequential algorithms and prove that any equation between PCF terms which holds in this model also holds in the strongly stable model.

A model of the untyped lambda calculus induces a lambda theory, i.e., a congruence relation on λterms closed under ff and ficonversion. A semantics (= class of models) of the lambda calculus is incomplete if there exists a lambda theory which is not induced by any model in the semantics. In this paper we introduce a new technique to prove the incompleteness of a wide range of lambda calculus semantics, including the strongly stable one, whose incompleteness had been conjectured by BastoneroGouy [6, 7] and by Berline [9]. The main results of the paper are a topological incompleteness theorem and an order incompleteness theorem. In the first one we show the incompleteness of the lambda calculus semantics given in terms of topological models whose topology satisfies a property of connectedness. In the second one we prove the incompleteness of the class of partially ordered models with finitely many connected components w.r.t. the Alexandroff topology. A further result of the paper is a proof of the completeness of the semantics of the lambda calculus given in terms of topological models whose topology is nontrivial and metrizable.
