The nearest neighbor problem is the following: Given a set of n points P = fp 1 ; : : : ; png in some metric space X, preprocess P so as to efficiently answer queries which require finding the point in P closest to a query point q 2 X. We focus on the particularly interesting case of the ddimensional Euclidean space where X = ! d under some l p norm. In this work we describe experiments with eigenfaces for recognition and interactive search in a largescale face database. Accurate visual recognition is demonstrated using a database of o(10^3) faces. The problem of recognition under general viewing orientation is also explained. A viewbased multipleobserver eigenspace technique is proposed for use in face recognition under variable pose. In addition, a modular eigenspace description technique is used which incorporates salient features such as the eyes, nose, mouth, in a eigenfeature layer. This modular representation yields higher recognition rates as well as a more robust framework for face recognition. An automatic feature extraction technique using feature eigentemplates is also demostrated.

We present an unsupervised technique for visual learning which is based on density estimation in highdimensional spaces using an eigenspace decomposition. Two types of density estimates are derived for modeling the training data: a multivariate Gaussian (for unimodal distributions) and a MixtureofGaussians model (for multimodal distributions). These probability densities are then used to formulate a maximumlikelihood estimation framework for visual search and target detection for automatic object recognition and coding. Our learning technique is applied to the probabilistic visual modeling, detection, recognition, and coding of human faces and nonrigid objects such as hands.

The nearest or nearneighbor query problems arise in a large variety of database applications, usually in the context of similarity searching. Of late, there has been increasing interest in building search/index structures for performing similarity search over highdimensional data, e.g., image databases, document collections, timeseries databases, and genome databases. Unfortunately, all known techniques for solving this problem fall prey to the \curse of dimensionality. &quot; That is, the data structures scale poorly with data dimensionality; in fact, if the number of dimensions exceeds 10 to 20, searching in kd trees and related structures involves the inspection of a large fraction of the database, thereby doing no better than bruteforce linear search. It has been suggested that since the selection of features and the choice of a distance metric in typical applications is rather heuristic, determining an approximate nearest neighbor should su ce for most practical purposes. We have witnessed great interest and a wealth of promise in contentbased image retrieval as an emerging technology. While the last decade laid foundation to such promise, it also paved the way for a large number of new techniques and systems, got many new people involved, and triggered stronger association of weakly related fields. In this article, we survey almost 300 key theoretical and empirical contributions in the current decade related to image retrieval and automatic image annotation, and in the process discuss the spawning of related subfields. We also discuss significant challenges involved in the adaptation of existing image retrieval techniques to build systems that can be useful in the real world. In retrospect of what has been achieved so far, we also conjecture what the future may hold for image retrieval research.

Chabot is a picture retrieval system for a database that will eventually include over 500,000 digitized multiresolution images. We describe the design and construction of this system which uses the relational database management system POSTGRES for storing and managing the images and their associated textual data. For retrieval, Chabot uses tools provided by POSTGRES, such as representation of complex data types, a rich query language, and extensible types and functions. To implement retrieval from the current collection of 11,643 images, Chabot integrates the use of stored text and other data types with contentbased analysis of the images to perform "concept queries". 1. We address the problem of designing data structures that allow efficient search for approximate nearest neighbors. More specifically, given a database consisting of a set of vectors in some high dimensional Euclidean space, we want to construct a spaceefficient data structure that would allow us to search, given a query vector, for the closest or nearly closest vector in the database. We also address this problem when distances are measured by the L 1 norm, and in the Hamming cube. Significantly improving and extending recent results of Kleinberg, we construct data structures whose size is polynomial in the size of the database, and search algorithms that run in time nearly linear or nearly quadratic in the dimension (depending on the case; the extra factors are polylogarithmic in the size of the database). Representing data as points in a highdimensional space, so as to use geometric methods for indexing, is an algorithmic technique with a wide array of uses. It is central to a number of areas such as information retrieval, pattern recognition, and statistical data analysis; many of the problems arising in these applications can involve several hundred or several thousand dimensions. We consider the nearestneighbor problem for ddimensional Euclidean space: we wish to preprocess a database of n points so that given a query point, one can efficiently determine its nearest neighbors in the database. There is a large literature on algorithms for this problem, in both the exact and approximate cases. The more sophisticated algorithms typically achieve a query time that is logarithmic in n at the expense of an exponential dependence on the dimension d; indeed, even the averagecase analysis of heuristics such as kd trees reveals an exponential dependence on d in the query time.
