Spectral partitioning methods use the Fiedler vectorthe eigenvector of the secondsmallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrixto find a small separator of a graph. These methods are important components of many scientific numerical algorithms and have been demonstrated by experiment to work extremely well. In this paper, we show that spectral partitioning methods work well on boundeddegree planar graphs and finite element meshes the classes of graphs to which they are usually applied. While naive spectral bisection does not necessarily work, we prove that spectral partitioning techniques can be used to produce separators whose ratio of vertices removed to edges cut is O( p n) for boundeddegree planar graphs and twodimensional meshes and O i n 1=d j for wellshaped ddimensional meshes. In this paper, we describe a scalable parallel algorithm for sparse matrix factorization, analyze their performance and scalability, and present experimental results for up to 1024 processors on a Cray T3D parallel computer. Through our analysis and experimental results, we demonstrate that our algorithm substantially improves the state of the art in parallel direct solution of sparse linear systems—both in terms of scalability and overall performance. It is a well known fact that dense matrix factorization scales well and can be implemented efficiently on parallel computers. In this paper, we present the first algorithm to factor a wide class of sparse matrices (including those arising from two and threedimensional finite element problems) that is asymptotically as scalable as dense matrix factorization algorithms on a variety of parallel architectures. Our algorithm incurs less communication overhead and is more scalable than any previously known parallel formulation of sparse matrix factorization. Although, in this paper, we discuss Cholesky factorization of symmetric positive definite matrices, the algorithms can be adapted for solving sparse linear least squares problems and for Gaussian elimination of diagonally dominant matrices that are almost symmetric in structure. An implementation of our sparse Cholesky factorization algorithm delivers up to 20 GFlops on a Cray T3D for mediumsize structural engineering and linear programming problems. We investigate a method of dividing an irregular mesh into equalsized pieces with few interconnecting edges. The method’s novel feature is that it exploits the geometric coordinates of the mesh vertices. It is based on theoretical work of Miller, Teng, Thurston, and Vavasis, who showed that certain classes of “wellshaped” finite element meshes have good separators. The geometric method is quite simple to implement: we describe a Matlab code for it in some detail. The method is also quite efficient and effective: we compare it with some other methods, including spectral bisection.

The problem of reordering a sparse symmetric matrix to reduce its envelope size is considered. A new spectral algorithm for computing an envelopereducing reordering is obtained by associating a Laplacian matrix with the given matrix and then sorting the components of a specified eigenvector of the Laplacian. This Laplacian eigenvector solves a continuous relaxation of a discrete problem related to envelope minimization called the minimum 2sum problem. The permutation vector computed by the spectral algorithm is a closest permutation vector to the specified Laplacian eigenvector. Numerical results show that the new reordering algorithm usually computes smaller envelope sizes than those obtained from the current standards such as the GibbsPooleStockmeyer (GPS) algorithm or the reverse CuthillMcKee (RCM) algorithm in SPARSPAK, in some cases reducing the envelope by more than a factor of two.

Identifying the parallelism in a problem by partitioning its data and tasks among the processors of a parallel computer is a fundamental issue in parallel computing. This problem can be modeled as a graph partitioning problem in which the vertices of a graph are divided into a specified number of subsets such that few edges join two vertices in different subsets. Several new graph partitioning algorithms have been developed in the past few years, and we survey some of this activity. We describe the terminology associated with graph partitioning, the complexity of computing good separators, and graphs that have good separators. We then discuss early algorithms for graph partitioning, followed by three new algorithms based on geometric, algebraic, and multilevel ideas. The algebraic algorithm relies on an eigenvector of a Laplacian matrix associated with the graph to compute the partition. Abstract – In this paper we present experiments with a class of graph partitioning algorithms that reduce the size of the graph by collapsing vertices and edges, partition the smaller graph, and then uncoarsen it to construct a partition for the original graph. We investigate the effectiveness of many different choices for all three phases: coarsening, partition of the coarsest graph, and refinement. In particular, we present a new coarsening heuristic (called heavyedge heuristic) for which the size of the partition of the coarse graph is within a small factor of the size of the final partition obtained after multilevel refinement. We also present a new scheme for refining during uncoarsening that is much faster than the KernighanLin refinement. We test our scheme on a large number of graphs arising in various domains including finite element methods, linear programming, VLSI, and transportation. Our experiments show that our scheme consistently produces partitions that are better than those produced by spectral partitioning schemes in substantially smaller timer (10 to 35 times faster than multilevel spectral bisection). Also, when our scheme is used to compute fill reducing orderings for sparse matrices, it substantially outperforms the widely used multiple minimum degree algorithm. 1

Two algorithms for reordering sparse, symmetric matrices or undirected graphs to reduce envelope and wavefront are considered. The rst is a combinatorial algorithm introduced by Sloan and further developed by Du, Reid, and Scott; we describe enhancements to the Sloan algorithm that improve its quality and reduce its run time. Our test problems fall into two classes with differing asymptotic behavior of their envelope parameters as a function of the weights in the Sloan algorithm. We describe an e cient O(n log n + m) time implementation of the Sloan algorithm, where n is the number of rows (vertices), and m is the number of nonzeros (edges). On a collection of test problems, the improved Sloan algorithm required, on the average, only twice the time required by the simpler Reverse CuthillMcKee algorithm while improving the mean square wavefront by a factor of three. The second algorithm is a hybrid that combines a spectral algorithm for envelope and wavefront reduction with a refinement step that uses a modified Sloan algorithm. The hybrid algorithm reduces the envelope size and mean square wavefront obtained from the Sloan algorithm at the cost of greater running times. We illustrate how these reductions translate into tangible bene ts for frontal Cholesky factorization and incomplete factorization preconditioning.

The problem of creating a map given only the erroneous odometry and feature measurements and locating the own position in this environment is known in the literature as the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem. In this paper we investigate how a Nested Dissection Ordering scheme can improve the the performance of a recently proposed Square Root Information Smoothing (SRIS) approach. As the SRIS does perform smoothing rather than filtering the SLAM problem becomes the Smoothing and Mapping problem (SAM). The computational complexity of the SRIS solution is dominated by the cost of transforming a matrix of all measurements into a square root form through factorization. The factorization of a fully dense measurement matrix has a cubic complexity in the worst case. We show that the computational complexity for the factorization of typical measurement matrices occurring in the SAM problem can be bound tighter under reasonable assumptions. Our work is motivated both from a numerical / linear algebra standpoint as well as by submaps used in EKF solutions to SLAM.

In this paper we introduce a simple probabilistic model, hierarchical tiles, for 01 data. A basic tile (X,Y,p) specifies a subset X of the rows and a subset Y of the columns of the data, i.e., a rectangle, and gives a probability p for the occurrence of 1s in the cells of X x Y. A hierarchical tile has additionally a set of exception tiles that specify the probabilities for subrectangles of the original rectangle. If the rows and columns are ordered and X and Y consist of consecutive elements in those orderings, then the tile is geometric; otherwise it is combinatorial. We give a simple randomized algorithm for finding good geometric tiles. Our main result shows that using spectral ordering techniques one can find good orderings that turn combinatorial tiles into geometric tiles. We give empirical results on the performance of the methods.
