The purpose of this chapter is to present a survey of recent publications concerning medical image registration techniques. These publications will be classified according to a model based on nine salient criteria, the main dichotomy of which is extrinsic versus intrinsic methods The statistics of the classification show definite trends in the evolving registration techniques, which will be discussed. At this moment, the bulk of interesting intrinsic methods is either based on segmented points or surfaces, or on techniques endeavoring to use the full information content of the images involved. Featurebased methods for nonrigid registration frequently encounter the correspondence problem. Regardless of whether points, lines, curves or surface parameterizations are used, featurebased nonrigid matching requires us to automatically solve for correspondences between two sets of features. In addition, there could be many features in either set that have no counterparts in the other. This outlier rejection problem further complicates an already di#cult correspondence problem. We formulate featurebased nonrigid registration as a nonrigid point matching problem. After a careful review of the problem and an indepth examination of two types of methods previously designed for rigid robust point matching (RPM), we propose a new general framework for nonrigid point matching. We consider it a general framework because it does not depend on any particular form of spatial mapping. We have also developed an algorithmthe TPSRPM algorithmwith the thinplate spline (TPS) as the parameterization of the nonrigid spatial mapping and the softassign for the correspondence. The performance of the TPSRPM algorithm is demonstrated and validated in a series of carefully designed synthetic experiments. In each of these experiments, an empirical comparison with the popular iterated closest point (ICP) algorithm is also provided. Finally, we apply the algorithm to the problem of nonrigid registration of cortical anatomical structures which is required in brain mapping. While these results are somewhat preliminary, they clearly demonstrate the applicability of our approach to real world tasks involving featurebased nonrigid registration.

This paper investigates the use of Euclidean invariant features in a generalization of iterative closest point registration of range images. Pointwise correspondences are chosen as the closest point with respect to a weighted linear combination of positional and feature distances. It is shown that under ideal noisefree conditions, correspondences formed using this distance function are correct more often than correspondences formed using the positional distance alone. In addition, monotonic convergence to at least a local minimum is shown to hold for this method. When noise is present, a method that automatically sets the optimal relative contribution of features and positions is described. This method trades off error in feature values due to noise against error in positions due to misalignment. Experimental results suggest that using invariant features decreases the probability of being trapped in a local minimum, and may be an effective solution for difficult range image registration problems where the scene is very small compared to the model.

AbstractThe analysis of medical images has been woven into the fabric of the Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) community since the earliest days of these Transactions. Initially, the efforts in this area were seen as applying pattern analysis and computer vision techniquss lo another interesting dataset. However. over the last two to three decades, the unique nature of the problems presented within this area of study have led to the development of a new dlscipline in its own right. Examples of these include: the types of image information that are acquired, the fully threedimensional image data, the nonrigid nature of object motion and deformation, and the statistical variation of both the underlying normal and abnormal ground truth. In this paper, we look at progress in the fiold over the last 20 years and suggest some of the challenges that remain for the years to come.

Abstract—Motivated by the problem of retinal image registration, this paper introduces and analyzes a new registration algorithm called DualBootstrap Iterative Closest Point (DualBootstrap ICP). The approach is to start from one or more initial, loworder estimates that are only accurate in small image regions, called bootstrap regions. In each bootstrap region, the algorithm iteratively: 1) refines the transformation estimate using constraints only from within the bootstrap region; 2) expands the bootstrap region; and 3) tests to see if a higher order transformation model can be used, stopping when the region expands to cover the overlap between images. Steps 1): and 3), the bootstrap steps, are governed by the covariance matrix of the estimated transformation. Estimation refinement [Step 2)] uses a novel robust version of the ICP algorithm. In registering retinal image pairs, DualBootstrap ICP is initialized by automatically matching individual vascular landmarks, and it aligns images based on detected blood vessel centerlines. The resulting quadratic transformations are accurate to less than a pixel. On tests involving approximately 6000 image pairs, it successfully registered 99.5 % of the pairs containing at least one common landmark, and 100 % of the pairs containing at least one common landmark and at least 35 % image overlap. We present a new approach to analyse the deformation of the left ventricle of the heart based on a parametric model that gives a compact representation of a set of points in a 3D image. We present a strategy for tracking surfaces in a sequence of 3D cardiac images. Following tracking, we then infer quantitative parameters which characterize: left ventricle motion, volume of left ventricle, ejection fraction, amplitude and twist component of cardiac motion. We explain the computation of these parameters using our model. Experimental results are shown in time sequences of two modalities of medical images, nuclear medicine and Xray computed tomography (CT). Video sequences presenting these results are on the CDROM.

We present a novel variational and statistical approach for shape registration. Shapes of interest are implicitly embedded in a higher dimensional space of distance transforms. In this implicit embedding space, registration is formulated in a hierarchical manner: the Mutual Information criterion supports various transformation models and is optimized to perform global registration; then a Bspline based Incremental Free Form Deformations (IFFD) model is used to minimize a SumofSquaredDifferences (SSD) measure and further recover a dense local nonrigid registration field. The key advantage of such framework is twofold: (1) it naturally deals with shapes of arbitrary dimension (2D, 3D or higher) and arbitrary topology (multiple parts, closed/open), and (2) it preserves shape topology during local deformation, and produces local registration fields that are smooth, continuous and establish onetoone correspondences. Its invariance to initial conditions is evaluated through empirical validation, and various hard 2D/3D geometric shape registration examples are used to show its robustness to noise, severe occlusion and missing parts. We demonstrate the power of the proposed framework using two applications: one for statistical modeling of anatomical structures, another for 3D face scan registration and expression tracking. We also compare the performance of our algorithm with that of several other wellknown shape registration algorithms.

We present a novel method for the geometric alignment of autoradiographs of the brain. The method is based on finding the spatial mapping and the onetoone correspondences (or homologies) between point features extracted from the images and rejecting nonhomologies as outliers. In this way, we attempt to account for the local natural and artifactual differences between the autoradiograph slices. We have executed the resulting automated algorithm on a set of left prefrontal cortex autoradiograph slices, specifically demonstrated its ability to perform point outlier rejection, validated it using synthetically generated spatial mappings and provided a visual comparison against the well known iterated closest point (ICP) algorithm. Visualization of a stack of aligned left prefrontal cortex autoradiograph slices is also provided.

Registration of 3D medical images consists in computing the “best” transformation between two acquisitions, or equivalently, determines the point to point correspondence between the images. Registration algorithms are usually based either on features extracted from the image (featurebased approaches) or on the optimization of a similarity measure of the images intensities (intensitybased or iconic approaches). Another classification criterion is the type of transformation sought (e.g. rigid or nonrigid). In this chapter, we concentrate on featurebased approaches for rigid registration, similar approaches for nonrigid registration being reported in another set of publication [35, 36]. We show how to reduce the dimension of the registration problem by first extracting a surface from the 3D image, then landmark curves on this surface and possibly landmark points on these curves. This concept proved its efficiency through many applications in medical image analysis as we will see in the sequel. This work has been for a long time a central investigation topic of the Epidaure team [2] and we can only reflect here on a small part of the research done in this area. We present in the first section the notions of crest lines and extremal points and how these differential geometry features can be extracted from 3D images. In Section 2, we focus on the different rigid registration algorithms that we used to register such features. The last section analyzes the possible errors in this registration scheme and demonstrates that a very accurate registration could be achieved.
