The conjectured Ftheorem for threedimensional field theories states that the finite part of the free energy on S3 decreases along RG trajectories and is stationary at the fixed points. In previous work various successful tests of this proposal were carried out for theories with N = 2 supersymmetry. In this paper we perform more general tests that do not rely on supersymmetry. We study perturbatively the RG flows produced by weakly relevant operators and show that the free energy decreases monotonically. We also consider large N field theories perturbed by relevant double trace operators, free massive field theories, and some ChernSimons gauge theories. In all cases the free energy in the IR is smaller than in the UV, consistent with the Ftheorem. We discuss other odddimensional Euclidean theories on Sd and provide evidence that (−1)(d−1)/2 log Z  decreases along RG flow; in the particular case d = 1 this is the wellknown gtheorem.

Threedimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) of deconfined gauge fields coupled to gapless flavors of fermionic and bosonic matter describe quantum critical points of condensed matter systems in two spatial dimensions. An important characteristic of these CFTs is the finite part of the entanglement entropy across a circle. The negative of this quantity is equal to the finite part of the free energy of the Euclidean CFT on the threesphere, and it has been proposed to satisfy the so called Ftheorem, which states that it decreases under RG flow and is stationary at RG fixed points. We calculate the threesphere free energy of nonsupersymmetric gauge theory with a large number NF of bosonic and/or fermionic flavors to the first subleading order in 1/NF. We also calculate the exact free energies of the analogous chiral and nonchiral N = 2 supersymmetric theories using localization, and find agreement with the 1/NF expansion. We analyze some RG flows of supersymmetric theories, providing further evidence for the Ftheorem.

We study the partition function of the N = 6 supersymmetric U(N1)k × U(N2)−k ChernSimonsmatter (CSM) theory, also known as the ABJ theory. For this purpose, we first compute the partition function of the U(N1)×U(N2) lens space matrix model exactly. The result can be expressed as a product of qdeformed Barnes Gfunction and a generalization of multiple qhypergeometric function. The ABJ partition function is then obtained from the lens space partition function by analytically continuing N2 to −N2. The answer is given by min(N1, N2)dimensional integrals and generalizes the “mirror description ” of the partition function of the ABJM theory, i.e. the N = 6 supersymmetric U(N)k × U(N)−k CSM theory. Our expression correctly reproduces perturbative expansions and vanishes for N1 − N2 > k in line with the conjectured supersymmetry breaking, and the Seiberg duality is explicitly checked for a class of nontrivial examples.

We give a Seiberglike dual description of the interacting superconformal infrared fixed point of N = 4 gauge theory in three dimensions with vanishing Chern Simons level and Nc ≤ Nf < 2Nc fundamental flavors. These theories are known as ”bad ” theories due to the existence of unitarity violating monopole operators. We show that, in a dual description, all such operators are realized by free fields and the remainder theory is the Seiberglike dual previously identified using the type IIB brane construction.
