Synchronous data-flow is a programming paradigm which has been successfully applied in reactive systems. In this context, it can be characterized as some class of static bounded memory data-flow networks. In particular, these networks are not recursively defined, and obey some kind of "synchronous" constraints (clock calculus). Based on Kahn's relationship between data-flow and stream functions, the synchronous constraints can be related to Wadler's listlessness, and can be seen as sufficient conditions ensuring listless evaluation. As a by-product, those networks enjoy efficient compiling techniques. In this paper, we show that it is possible to extend the class of static synchronous data-flow to higher order and dynamical networks, thus giving sense to a larger class of synchronous data-flow networks.

The emergence of pervasive networked data sources, such as web services, sensors, and mobile devices, enables context-sensitive, mobile applications. We have developed a programming model for writing such applications, in which entities called composers accept data from one or more sources, and act as sources of higher-level data. We have defined and implemented a nonprocedural language, iQL, specifying the behavior of composers. An iQL programmer expresses requirements for data sources rather than identifying specific sources; a runtime system discovers appropriate data sources, binds to them, and rebinds when properties of data sources change. Embedded computer systems seem to be the antithesis of functional language systems. Embedded systems are small, stand-alone, and are often forced to accept inelegant design compromises due to hardware cost. They run continuously and are reactive, that is, their primary goal is to monitor sensors and control effectors, using observed external events to trigger state-changing control actions. Yet this thesis describes how functional abstraction can tame the inelegance of embedded systems. Architectural compromises can be made in device drivers, programmed within the functional language, but a function-level interface is presented to the application programmer. Four modifications are introduced to a test-bed purely-functional language in order to facilitate embedded-systems programming: I/O register access; communicating processes; interrupts; and a real-time incremental garbage collector.
