With the advances in telecommunications, and the introduction of the Internet, information systems achieved physical connectivity, but have yet to establish logical connectivity. Lack of logical connectivity is often inviting disaster as in the case of Mars Orbiter, which was lost because one team used metric units, the other English while exchanging a critical maneuver data. In this Thesis, we focus on the two intertwined sub problems of logical connectivity, namely data extraction and data interpretation in the domain of heterogeneous information systems. The first challenge, data extraction, is about making it possible to easily exchange data among semi-structured and structured information systems. We describe the design and implementation of a general purpose, regular expression based Caméléon wrapper engine with an integrated capabilities-aware planner/optimizer/executioner. The second challenge, data interpretation, deals with the existence of heterogeneous contexts, whereby each source of information and potential receiver of that information may operate with a different context, leading to large-scale semantic heterogeneity. The power of web services can only be realized when web services are utilized as building blocks to dynamically compose new web services. The Building Finder application is an example application that integrates information from several web services by modeling the web services as information sources in a mediator-based architecture. The paper also describes a mediator framework to dynamically compose new web services, similar to the Building Finder, by generating an integration plan to integrate information from the existing web services.

Planning and monitoring a trip is a common but complicated human activity. Creating an itinerary is nontrivial because it requires coordination with existing schedules and making a variety of interdependent choices. Once planned, there are many possible events that can affect the plan, such as schedule changes or flight cancellations, and checking for these possible events requires time and effort. In this paper, we describe how Heracles and Theseus, two information gathering and monitoring tools that we built, can be used to simplify this process. Heracles is a hierarchical constraint planner that aids in interactive itinerary development by showing how a particular choice (e.g., destination airport) affects other choices (e.g., possible modes of transportation, available airlines, etc.). Heracles builds on an information agent platform, called Theseus, that provides the technology for efficiently executing agents for information gathering and monitoring tasks. In this paper we present the technologies underlying these systems and describe how they are applied to build a state-of-the-art travel system.

Web services enable the user to integrate and manipulate data from distributed data sources without worrying about the underlying syntactical details. We describe extensions to the view integration approach to support dynamic integration of data from web services and support dynamic composition of web services from existing web services. In particular, we describe techniques to extend the "inverse rules" query reformulation algorithm to generate a universal integration plan to answer user queries. To demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques we describe a mediator-based system that dynamically integrates various web services in response to a user query and provides a integrated web service that can handle a range of user queries.
