The OWL Web Ontology Language is a new formal language for representing ontologies in the Semantic Web. In this paper we describe a policy language designed for pervasive computing applications that is based on deontic concepts and grounded in a semantic language. The pervasive computing environments under consideration are those in which people and devices are mobile and use various wireless networking technologies to discover and access services and devices in their vicinity. Such pervasive environments lend themselves to policy-based security due to their extremely dynamic nature. Using policies allows the security functionality to be modified without changing the implementation of the entities involved. However, along with being extremely dynamic these environments also tend to span several domains and be made up of entities of varied capabilities. A policy language for environments of this sort needs to be very expressive but lightweight and easily extensible. We demonstrate the feasibility of our policy language in pervasive environments through a prototype used as part of a secure pervasive system.

As web services become more prevalent, tools will be needed to help users find, filter and integrate these services. Composing existing services to obtain new functionality will prove to be essential for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications. We have developed a prototype that guides a user in the dynamic composition of web services. Our semi-automatic process includes presenting matching services to the user at each step of a composition, filtering the possibilities by using semantic descriptions of the services. The generated composition is then directly executable through the WSDL grounding of the services. We tested our system by generating semantic descriptions for some of the common services available on the web such as translator, dictionary and map services. We also applied our approach to a prototype sensor network environment where each sensor provides its data as a network service.

The DAML-S Process Model is designed to support the application of AI planning techniques to the automated composition of Web services. SHOP2 is an Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planner well-suited for working with the Process Model. We have proven the correspondence between the semantics of SHOP2 and the situation calculus semantics of the Process Model. We have also implemented a system which soundly and completely plans over sets of DAML-S descriptions using a SHOP2 planner, and then executes the resulting plans over the Web. We discuss the challenges and di#culties of using SHOP2 in the information-rich and human-oriented context of Web services.

The perspective role of UML as a conceptual modelling language for the Semantic Web has become an important research topic. We argue that UML could be a key technology for overcoming the ontology development bottleneck thanks to its wide acceptance and sophisticated tool support. Transformational approaches are a promising way of establishing a connection between UML and web-based ontology languages. We compare some proposals for defining transformations between UML and web ontology languages and discuss the different ways they handle the conceptual differences between these languages. We identify commonalities and differences of the approaches and point out open questions that have not or not satisfyingly been addressed by existing approaches.

Context-aware computing is an emerging paradigm to free everyday users from manually configuring and instructing computer systems. As the general trend of computing is progressing towards an open and dynamic infrastructure, building context-aware systems can be difficult and costly. In order to build successful context-aware systems, we must develop an architecture to reduce the difficulty and cost of building these systems. This PhD. dissertation proposal describes a research plan to develop a broker-centric agent architecture that is aimed to relieve the burden of capability-limited agents of acquiring and reasoning about contexts, and to protect the privacy of users in a context-aware environment. The implementation of the Context Broker Archiecture will explore Web Ontology Language for modeling contexts and privacy policies, Jess for building a hybrid reasoning mechanism and JADE/FIPA for realizing broker behaviors and agent communications.
