Within the context of an algebraic theory of processes, an equational specification of process cooperation is provided. Four cases are considered: free merge or interleaving, merging with communication, merging with mutual exclusion of tight regions, and synchronous process cooperation. The rewrite system behind the communication algebra is shown to be confluent and terminating (modulo its permutative reductions). Further, some relationships are shown to hold between the four concepts of merging. © 1984 Academic Press, Inc.

. Rewriting is a computational paradigm that specifies the actions, but not the control. We introduce a hierarchical structure representing, at a high level of abstraction, a form of control. Its application solves a specific problem arising in the design and implementation of inherently sequential, lazy, functional programming languages based on rewriting. For example, we show how to extend the expressive power of Log(F ) and how to improve the efficiency of an implementation of BABEL. Our framework provides a notion of degree of parallelism of an operation and shows that the elements of a necessary set of redexes are related by an and-or relation. Both concepts find application in parallel implementations of rewriting. In an environment in which computations can be executed in parallel we are able to detect sequential computations in order to minimize overheads and/or optimize execution. The Damas-Milner Calculus is the typed -calculus underlying the type system for ML and several other strongly typed polymorphic functional languages such as Miranda 1 and Haskell. Mycroft has extended its problematic monomorphic typing rule for recursive definitions with a polymorphic typing rule. He proved the resulting type system, which we call the Milner-Mycroft Calculus, sound with respect to Milner's semantics, and showed that it preserves the principal typing property of the Damas-Milner Calculus. The extension is of practical significance in typed logic programming languages and, more generally, in any language with (mutually) recursive definitions. In this paper we show that the type inference problem for the Milner-Mycroft Calculus is log-space equivalent to semi-unification, the problem of solving subsumption inequations between first-order terms. Categorical combinators [12, 21, 43] and more recently oe-calculus [1, 23], have been introduced to provide an explicit treatment of substitutions in the -calculus. We reintroduce here the ingredients of these calculi in a self-contained and stepwise way, with a special emphasis on confluence properties. The main new results of the paper w.r.t. [12, 21, 1, 23] are the following: 1. We present a confluent weak calculus of substitutions, where no variable clashes can be feared. 2. We solve a conjecture raised in [1]: oe-calculus is not confluent (it is confluent on ground terms only). This unfortunate result is "repaired" by presenting a confluent version of oe-calculus, named the Env-calculus in [23], called here the confluent oe-calculus.

The aim of this paper is to present the s-calculus which is a very simple -calculus with explicit substitutions and to prove its confluence on closed terms and the preservation of strong normalisation of -terms. We shall prove strong normalisation of the corresponding calculus of substitution by translating it into the oe-calculus [ACCL91], and therefore the relation between both calculi will be made explicit. The confluence of the s-calculus is obtained by the "interpretation method" ([Har89], [CHL92]). The proof of the preservation of normalisation follows the lines of an analogous result for the AE-calculus (cf. [BBLRD95]). The relation between s and AE is also studied.

Almost every programmer has faced the problem of representing a tree together with a subtree that is the focus of attention, where that focus may move left, right, up, or down the tree. The Zipper is Huet’s nifty name for a nifty data structure which fulfills this need. I wish I had known of it when I faced this task, because the solution I came up with was not quite so efficient or elegant as the Zipper.
