Developers of application codes for massively parallel computer systems face daunting performance tuning and optimization problems that must be solved if massively parallel systems are to fulfill their promise. Recording and analyzing the dynamics of application program, system software, and hardware interactions is the key to understanding and the prerequisite to performance tuning, but this instrumentation and analysis must not unduly perturb program execution. Pablo is a performance analysis environment designed to provide unobtrusive performance data capture, analysis, and presentation across a wide variety of scalable parallel systems. Current efforts include dynamic statistical clustering to reduce the volume of data that must be captured and complete performance data immersion via head-mounted displays. 1 Introduction As computational science becomes an equal partner to theory and experiment, there is growing consensus that massively parallel systems are the only technically an...

As massively parallel, distributed memory systems replace traditional vector supercomputers, effective application program optimization and system resource management become more than research curiosities --- they are crucial to achieving substantial fractions of peak performance for scientific application codes. By recording dynamic activity, either at the application or system software level, one can identify and remove performance bottlenecks. Pablo is a performance analysis environment designed to provide performance data capture, analysis, and presentation across a wide variety of scalable parallel systems. The Pablo environment includes software performance instrumentation, graphical performance data reduction and analysis, and support for mapping performance data to both graphics and sound. Current research directions include complete performance data immersion via head-mounted displays and the integration of Pablo with data parallel Fortran compilers based on the emerging High ...

Sonification is the use of non-speech audio to convey information. We are developing tools for interactive data exploration, which make use of sonification for data presentation. In this paper, model-based sonification is presented as a concept to design auditory displays. Two designs are described: (1) particle trajectories in a "data potential" is a sonification model to reveal information about the clustering of vectorial data and (2) "data-sonograms" is a sonification for data from a classification problem to reveal information about the mixing of distinct classes.

. Massively parallel systems pose daunting performance instrumentation and data analysis problems. Balancing instrumentation detail, application perturbation, data reduction costs, and presentation complexity requires a mix of science, engineering, and art. This paper surveys current techniques for performance instrumentation and data presentation, illustrates one approach to tool extensibility, and discusses the implications of massive parallelism for performance analysis environments. 1 Introduction The most constant difficulty in contriving the engine has arisen from the desire to reduce the time in which the calculations were executed to the shortest which is possible. Charles Babbage In the past one hundred and fifty years, little has changed since Babbage's remark. Performance optimization remains a difficult and elusive goal. And as we move from vector supercomputers to parallel systems that scale from tens to thousands of processors, many of the performance instrumentation, d...

this document is to describe the Pablo visualization system which provides a portable, scalable, and extensible tool for the analysis and display of data written in the Pablo SDDF. In particular, the user interacts graphically with the Pablo performance visualization system to organize, transform, analyze and display performance data collected from programs executing on parallel processors and saved in Pablo SDDF files.

This paper describes the second phase in a project exploring the application of sonification to improve the accessibility of spreadsheets. The principal target population of the study has been visually impaired users, though the approach has potential in a range of other application areas, such as the eyes-free monitoring of large data spaces, or to preserve screen space in mobile use. The paper begins by examining previous sonification research relevant to the auditory display of spreadsheets, before briefly reviewing the results and requirements arising from the first phase of this project. Phase 2 of the project began with a more detailed requirement investigation, the results of which are outlined. In particular, the requirement for increased interactivity is examined. The way in which these requirements
