This paper has two objectives. First, we will argue that the mutability of conceptual fea- tures can be represented as a single, multiple-valued dimension. We will show that the fea- tures of a concept can be reliably ordered with respect to the degree to which people are willing to transform the feature while retaining the integrity of a representation; i.e., that a number of conceptual tasks, all of which require people to transform conceptual features, produce similar orderings. Following Medin and Shoben (1988), these tasks have in common that they ask people to consider an object that is missing a feature but is otherwise intact (e.g., a real chair without a seat)

The nature of categories and their acquisition is one of the central open questions in Cognitive Science. We suggest that categories are represented via structured descriptions and formed by a process of progressive abstraction, through successive comparison with incoming exemplars. This paper describes how SEQL (Skorstad, Gentner, & Medin, 1988), a computer model for category learning, which is based on SME (Falkenhainer et al 1986, 1989; Forbus et al 1994) can be used to simulate a recent categorization experiment (Ramscar & Pain, 1996), using a new algorithm, Generalization and Exemplar Learning (GEL). The authors present a theory of how relational inference and generalization can be accomplished within a cognitive architecture that is psychologically and neurally realistic. Their proposal is a form of symbolic connectionism: a connectionist system based on distributed representations of concept meanings, using temporal synchrony to bind fillers and roles into relational structures. The authors present a specific instantiation of their theory in the form of a computer simulation model, Learning and Inference with Schemas and Analogies (LISA). By using a kind of self-supervised learning, LISA can make specific inferences and form new relational generalizations and can hence acquire new schemas by induction from examples. The authors demonstrate the sufficiency of the model by using it to simulate a body of empirical phenomena concerning analogical inference and relational generalization. A fundamental aspect of human intelligence is the ability to form and manipulate relational representations. Examples of relational thinking include the ability to appreciate analogies between seemingly different objects or events (Gentner, 1983; Holyoak & Thagard, 1995), the ability to apply abstract rules in novel situations (e.g., Smith, Langston, & Nisbett, 1992), the ability to understand and learn language (e.g., Kim, Pinker, Prince, & Prasada, 1991), and even the ability to appreciate perceptual similarities

This paper begins with a brief review of SME and MAC/FAC, our simulations of matching and retrieval. Next I lay out several arguments for exploring analogy in the large, including why it is now very feasible and what we can learn by such explorations. A new constraint on cognitive simulations, the Integration Constraint, is proposed: A cognitive simulation of some aspect of analogical processing should be usable as a component in larger-scale cognitive simulations. I believe that the implications of this new constraint for cognitive simulation of analogy are far-reaching. After that, two explorations of larger-scale phenomena are described. First, I describe a theoretical framework in which we model common sense reasoning as an interplay of analogical and first-principles reasoning. Second, I describe how SME and MAC/FAC have been used in a case-based coach that is accessible to engineering thermodynamics students worldwide via electronic mail. These examples show that exploring analogy in the large can provide new insights and new challenges to our simulations. Finally, the broader implications of this approach are discussed.

Hofstadter and his colleagues have criticized current accounts of analogy, claiming that such accounts do not accurately capture interactions between processes of representation construction and processes of mapping. They suggest instead that analogy should be viewed as a form of high level perception that encompasses both representation building and mapping as indivisible operations within a single model. They argue specifically against SME, our model of analogical matching, on the grounds that it is modular, and offer instead programs such as Mitchell and Hofstadter's Copycat as examples of the high level perception approach. In this paper we argue against this position on two grounds. First, we demonstrate that most of their specific arguments invo lving SME and Copycat are incorrect. Second, we argue that the claim that analogy is high-level perception, while in some ways an attractive metaphor, is too vague to be useful as a technical proposal. We focus on five issues: (1) how perception relates to analogy, (2) how flexibility arises in analogical processing, (3) whether analogy is a domain-general process, (4) how micro-worlds should be used in the study of analogy, and (5) how best to assess the psychological plausibility of a model of analogy. We illustrate our discussion with examples taken from computer models embodying both views.

People often interpret novel noun-noun combinations by transferring a property from one constituent concept of the combination to the other. Two theories make different predictions about these `property' interpretations. Dual-process theory predicts that properties transferred will be alignable differences of the concepts being combined. Constraint theory predicts that properties transferred will be diagnostic properties of the concepts they originate in. An experimental study tested these contrasting predictions in interpretation comprehension and interpretation production tasks. The results showed that participants reliably preferred diagnostic property interpretations, whether alignable or non-alignable, in both tasks. There was no reliable preference for alignable interpretations in either task. This confirms constraint theory's predictions about property interpretations, and goes against the predictions of dual-process theory.
