Content based 3D shape retrieval for broad domains like the World Wide Web has recently gained considerable attention in Computer Graphics community. One of the main challenges in this context is the mapping of 3D objects into compact canonical representations referred to as descriptors, which serve as search keys during the retrieval process. The descriptors should have certain desirable properties like invariance under scaling, rotation and translation. Very importantly, they should possess descriptive power providing a basis for similarity measure between three-dimensional objects which is close to the human notion of resemblance. In this paper we advocate the usage of so-called 3D Zernike invariants as descriptors for content based 3D shape retrieval. The basis polynomials of this representation facilitate computation of invariants under the above transformations. Some theoretical results have already been summarized in the past from the aspect of pattern recognition and shape analysis. We provide practical analysis of these invariants along with algorithms and computational details. Furthermore, we give a detailed discussion on influence of the algorithm parameters like type and resolution of the conversion into a volumetric function, number of utilized coefficients, etc. As is revealed by our study, the 3D Zernike descriptors are natural extensions of spherical harmonics based descriptors, which are reported to be among the most successful representations at present. We conduct a comparison of 3D Zernike descriptors against these regarding computational aspects and shape retrieval performance.

New acquisition and modeling tools make it easier to create 3D models, and affordable and powerful graphics hardware makes it easier to use them. As a result, the number of 3D models available on the web is increasing rapidly. However, it is still not as easy to find 3D models as it is to find, for example, text documents and images. What is needed is a "3D model search engine," a specialized search engine that targets 3D models. We created a prototype 3D model search engine to investigate the design and implementation issues. Our search engine can be partitioned into three main components: (1) acquisition: 3D models have to be collected from the web, (2) analysis: they have to be analyzed for later matching, and (3) query processing and matching: an online system has to match user queries to the collected 3D models. Our site currently indexes over 36,000 models, of which about 31,000 are freely available. In addition to a text search interface, it offers several 3D and 2D shape-based query interfaces. Since it went online one year ago (in November 2001), it has processed over 148,000 searches from 37,800 hosts in 103 different countries. Currently 20--25% of the about 1,000 visitors per week are returning users. This paper reports on our initial experiences designing, building, and running the 3D model search engine.

D surface classification is a fundamental problem in computer vision and computational geometry. Surfaces can be classified by different transformation groups. Traditional classification methods mainly use topological transformation groups and Euclidean transformation groups. This paper introduces a novel method to classify surfaces by conformal transformation groups. Conformal equivalent class is refiner than topological equivalent class and coarser than isometric equivalent class, making it suitable for practical classification purposes. For general surfaces, the gradient fields of conformal maps form a vector space, which has a natural structure invariant under conformal transformations. We present an algorithm to compute this conformal structure, which can be represented as matrices, and use it to classify surfaces. The result is intrinsic to the geometry, invariant to triangulation and insensitive to resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to classify surfaces with arbitrary topologies by global conformal invariants. The method introduced here can also be used for surface matching problems.

A variety of methods have been proposed that enable the efficient querying of model repositories for a desired 3D shape. Symmetry and self-similarity is the cornerstone of Nature, exhibiting itself through the shapes of natural creations and ubiquitous laws of physics. Since many natural objects are symmetric, the absence of symmetry can often be an indication of some anomaly or abnormal behavior. Therefore, detection of asymmetries is important in numerous practical applications, including crystallography, medical imaging, and face recognition, to mention a few. Conversely, the assumption of underlying shape symmetry can facilitate solutions to many problems in shape reconstruction and analysis. Traditionally, symmetries are described as extrinsic geometric properties of the shape. While being adequate for rigid shapes, such a description is inappropriate for non-rigid ones: extrinsic symmetry can be broken as a result of shape deformations, while its intrinsic symmetry is preserved. In this paper, we present a generalization of symmetries for non-rigid shapes and a numerical framework for their analysis, addressing the problems of full and partial exact and approximate symmetry detection and classification.

To encourage sharing and reuse, techniques that support matching and retrieval of these models are emerging. However, only a few of them can handle deformable models, that is, models of different poses, and these methods are generally very slow. In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient matching and retrieval of 3D deformable models. Our research idea stresses using both topological and geometric features at the same time. First, we propose Topological Point Ring (TPR) analysis to locate reliable topological points and rings. Second, we capture both local and global geometric information to characterize each of these topological features. To compare the similarity of two models, we adapt the Earth Mover Distance (EMD) as the distance function and construct an indexing tree to accelerate the retrieval process. We demonstrate the performance of the new method, both in terms of accuracy and speed, through a large number of experiments. Abstract. Perfect, partial, and approximate symmetries are pervasive in 3D surface meshes of real-world objects. However, current digital geometry processing algorithms generally ignore them, instead focusing on local shape features and differential surface properties. This paper investigates how detection of large-scale symmetries can be used to guide processing of 3D meshes. It investigates a framework for mesh processing that includes steps for symmetrization (applying a warp to make a surface more symmetric) and symmetric remeshing (approximating a surface with a mesh having symmetric topology). These steps can be used to enhance the symmetries of a mesh, to decompose a mesh into its symmetric parts and asymmetric residuals, and to establish correspondences between symmetric mesh features. Applications are demonstrated for modeling, beautification, and simplification of nearly symmetric surfaces. Key words: symmetry analysis, mesh processing 1
