We study a general class of bicriteria network design problems. A generic problem in this class is as follows: Given an undirected graph and two minimization objectives (under different cost functions), with a budget specified on the first, find a ¡subgraph from a given subgraphclass that minimizes the second objective subject to the budget on the first. We consider three different criteria the total edge cost, the diameter and the maximum degree of the network. Here, we present the first polynomialtime approximation algorithms for a large class of bicriteria network design problems for the above mentioned criteria. The following general types of results are presented. First, we develop a framework for bicriteria problems and their approximations. Second, when the two criteria are the same we present a “black box ” parametric search technique. This black box takes in as input an (approximation) algorithm for the unicriterion situation and generates an approximation algorithm for the bicriteria case with only a constant factor loss in the performance guarantee. We study the problem of finding small trees. Classical network design problems are considered with the additional constraint that only a specified number k of nodes are required to be connected in the solution. A prototypical example is the kMST problem in which we require a tree of minimum weight spanning at least k nodes in an edgeweighted graph. We show that the kMST problem is NPhard even for points in the Euclidean plane. We provide approximation algorithms with performance ratio 2 p k for the general edgeweighted case and O(k 1=4 ) for the case of points in the plane. Polynomialtime exact solutions are also presented for the class of treewidthbounded graphs which includes trees, seriesparallel graphs, and bounded bandwidth graphs, and for points on the boundary of a convex region in the Euclidean plane. In this paper we give, for all constants k, l, explicit algorithms, that given a graph G = (V; E) with a treedecomposition of G with treewidth at most l, decide whether the treewidth (or pathwidth) of G is at most k, and if so, find a treedecomposition or (pathdecomposition) of G of width at most k, and that use O(V) time. In contrast with previous solutions, our algorithms do not rely on nonconstructive reasoning, and are single exponential in k and l. This result can be combined with a result of Reed [37], yielding explicit O(n log n) algorithms for the problem, given a graph G, to determine whether the treewidth (or pathwidth) of G is at most k, and if so, to find a tree (or path)decomposition of width at most k (k constant). Also, Bodlaender [13] has used the result of this paper to obtain linear time algorithms for these problems. We also show that for all constants k, there exists a polynomial time algorithm, that, when given a graph G = (V; E) with treewidth k, computes the pathwidth of G and a minimum path decomposition of G.

For many fixedparameter problems that are trivially solvable in polynomialtime, such as kDominating Set, essentially no better algorithm is presently known than the one which tries all possible solutions. Other problems, such as kFeedback Vertex Set, exhibit fixedparameter tractability: for each fixed k the problem is solvable in time bounded by a polynomial of degree c, where c is a constant independent of k. We show that for this problem, and for the problem of determining whether a graph has k disjoint cycles, we may take c = 1. We also show that if Dominating Set is fixedparameter tractable, then so are a variety of parameterized problems, such as Independent Set. Some of the main results of a completeness theory for fixedparameter intractability are surveyed. 1.

We describe the first parallel algorithm with optimal speedup for constructing minimumwidth tree decompositions of graphs of bounded treewidth. On nvertex input graphs, the algorithm works in O((logn)^2) time using O(n) operations on the EREW PRAM. We also give faster parallel algorithms with optimal speedup for the problem of deciding whether the treewidth of an input graph is bounded by a given constant and for a variety of problems on graphs of bounded treewidth, including all decision problems expressible in monadic secondorder logic. On nvertex input graphs, the algorithms use O(n) operations together with O(log n log n) time on the EREW PRAM, or O(log n) time on the CRCW PRAM.

this article is a proof that each FO problem can be solved in linear time if only relational structures of bounded degree are considered. The basic idea of the proof is a localization technique based on a method that was originally developed by Hanf (Hanf 1965) to show that the elementary theories of two structures are equal under certain conditions, i.e., that two structures agree on all firstorder sentences. Fagin, Stockmeyer and Vardi (Fagin et al. 1993) developed a variant of this technique, which is applicable in descriptive complexity theory to classes of finite relational structures of uniformly bounded degree. Variants of this result can also be found in Gaifman (1982) (see also Thomas (1991)). The essential content of this result, which is also called the HanfSphere Lemma, is that two relational structures of bounded degree satisfy the same firstorder sentences of a certain quantifierrank if both contain, up to a certain number m, the same number of isomorphism types of substructures of a bounded radius r. In addition, a technique of model interpretability from Rabin (1965) (see also Arnborg et al. (1991), Seese (1992), Compton and Henson (1987) and Baudisch et al. (1982)) is adapted to descriptive complexity classes, and proved to be useful for reducing the case of an arbitrary class of relational structures to a class of structures consisting only of the domain and one binary irreflexive and symmetric relation, i.e., the class of simple graphs. It is shown that the class of simple graphs is lintimeuniversal with respect to firstorder logic, which shows that many problems on descriptive complexity classes, described in languages extending firstorder logic for arbitrary structures, can be reduced to problems on simple graphs.
