This thesis deals with the integration of a fieldbus system into an open environment, that uses middleware technology to increase the bus devices' functionality and their accessabilty, especially by means of the internet. Jini, a Java based approach to ease difficulties involved when designing distributed systems, has been chosen as middleware layer.
