The mathematical framework of Stone duality is used to synthesize a number of hitherto separate developments in Theoretical Computer Science: • Domain Theory, the mathematical theory of computation introduced by Scott as a foundation for denotational semantics. • The theory of concurrency and systems behaviour developed by Milner, Hennessy et al. based on operational semantics. • Logics of programs. Stone duality provides a junction between semantics (spaces of points = denotations of computational processes) and logics (lattices of properties of processes). Moreover, the underlying logic is geometric, which can be computationally interpreted as the logic of observable properties—i.e. properties which can be determined to hold of a process on the basis of a finite amount of information about its execution. These ideas lead to the following programme:

In this dissertation we investigate presheaf models for concurrent computation. Our aim is to provide a systematic treatment of bisimulation for a wide range of concurrent process calculi. Bisimilarity is defined abstractly in terms of open maps as in the work of Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel. Their work inspired this thesis by suggesting that presheaf categories could provide abstract models for concurrency with a builtin notion of bisimulation. We show how

This paper investigates presheaf models for process calculi with value passing. Denotational semantics in presheaf models are shown to correspond to operational semantics in that bisimulation obtained from open maps is proved to coincide with bisimulation as defined traditionally from the operational semantics. Both "early" and "late" semantics are considered, though the more interesting "late" semantics is emphasised. A presheaf model and denotational semantics is proposed for a language allowing process passing, though there remains the problem of relating the notion of bisimulation obtained from open maps to a more traditional definition from the operational semantics.

We analyze the relative expressive power of variants of the indeterminate fair merge operator in the context of static dataflow. We establish that there are three different, provably inequivalent, forms of unbounded indeterminacy. In particular, we show that the wellknown fair merge primitive cannot be expressed with just unbounded indeterminacy. Our proofs are based on a simple trace semantics and on identifying properties of the behaviors of networks that are invariant under network composition. The properties we consider in this paper are all generalizations of monotonicity. 1

The distinction between the conjunctive nature of nondeterminism as opposed to the disjunctive character of parallelism constitutes the motivation and the starting point of the present work. λcalculus is extended with both a nondeterministic choice and a parallel operator; a notion of reduction is introduced, extending fireduction of the classical calculus. We study type assignment systems for this calculus, together with a denotational semantics which is initially defined constructing a set semimodel via simple types. We enrich the type system with intersection and union types, dually reflecting the disjunctive and conjunctive behaviour of the operators, and we build a filter model. The theory of this model is compared both with a Morrisstyle operational semantics and with a semantics based on a notion of capabilities.

Kahn's principle states that if each process in a dataflow network computes a continuous input/output function, then so does the entire network. Moreover, in that case the function computed by the network is the least fixed point of a continuous functional determined by the structure of the network and the functions computed by the individual processes. Previous attempts to generalize this principle in a straightforward way to "indeterminate" networks, in which processes need not compute functions, have been either too complex or have failed to give results consistent with operational semantics. This paper presents a semantics for nondeterministic concurrent constraint programming languages. The semantics address the issues of giving an adequate treatment of nonterminating computations, in particular with fairness and liveness, and giving a compositional semantics, where the meaning of a recursively defined program is obtained as a fixpoint. We present a simple concurrent constraint programming language with a reduction rule semantics, which is augmented with fairness requirements. We specify how traces are obtained from fair computations of a program. The operational semantics of a program is defined as the set of traces of the program. We show that this trace semantics can be defined compositionally. The trace semantics is transformed into a continuous fixpoint semantics, using the framework of Lehmann's categorytheoretic constructions, and present a general schema for defining continuous operators on the semantic domain.
