In this paper, we propose a new model for active contours to detect objects in a given image, based on techniques of curve evolution, Mumford--Shah functional for segmentation and level sets. Our model can detect objects whose boundaries are not necessarily defined by gradient. We minimize an energy which can be seen as a particular case of the minimal partition problem. In the level set formulation, the problem becomes a "mean-curvature flow"-like evolving the active contour, which will stop on the desired boundary. However, the stopping term does not depend on the gradient of the image, as in the classical active contour models, but is instead related to a particular segmentation of the image. We will give a numerical algorithm using finite differences. Finally, we will present various experimental results and in particular some examples for which the classical snakes methods based on the gradient are not applicable. Also, the initial curve can be anywhere in the image, and interior contours are automatically detected.

In this paper we describe a new technique for general purpose interactive segmentation of N-dimensional images. The user marks certain pixels as “object” or “background” to provide hard constraints for segmentation. Additional soft constraints incorporate both boundary and region information. Graph cuts are used to find the globally optimal segmentation of the N-dimensional image. The obtained solution gives the best balance of boundary and region properties among all segmentations satisfying the constraints. The topology of our segmentation is unrestricted and both “object” and “background” segments may consist of sev-eral isolatedparts. Some experimental results are presented in the context ofphotohideo editing and medical image seg-mentation. We also demonstrate an interesting Gestalt example. A fast implementation of our segmentation method is possible via a new mar-$ow algorithm in [2].

A novel method of incorporating shape information into the image segmentation process is presented. We introduce a representation for deformable shapes and define a probability distribution over the variances of a set of training shapes. The segmentation process embeds an initial curve as the zero level set of a higher dimensional surface, and evolves the surface such that the zero level set converges on the boundary of the object to be segmented. At each step of the surface evolution, we estimate the maximum a posteriori (MAP) position and shape of the object in the image, based on the prior shape information and the image information. We then evolve the surface globally, towards the MAP estimate, and locally, based on image gradients and curvature. Results are demonstrated on synthetic data and medical imagery, in 2D and 3D. 1

We propose a new multiphase level set framework for image segmentation using the Mumford and Shah model, for piecewise constant and piecewise smooth optimal approximations. The proposed method is also a generalization of an active contour model without edges based 2-phase segmentation, developed by the authors earlier in T. Chan and L. Vese (1999. In Scale-Space'99, M. Nilsen et al. (Eds.), LNCS, vol. 1682, pp. 141--151) and T. Chan and L. Vese (2001. IEEE-IP, 10(2):266--277). The multiphase level set formulation is new and of interest on its own: by construction, it automatically avoids the problems of vacuum and overlap; it needs only log n level set functions for n phases in the piecewise constant case; it can represent boundaries with complex topologies, including triple junctions; in the piecewise smooth case, only two level set functions formally suffice to represent any partition, based on The Four-Color Theorem. Finally, we validate the proposed models by numerical results for signal and image denoising and segmentation, implemented using the Osher and Sethian level set method.

This paper presents a novel variational framework to deal with frame partition problems in Computer Vision. This framework exploits boundary and region-based segmentation modules under a curve-based optimization objective function. The task of supervised texture segmentation is considered to demonstrate the potentials of the proposed framework. The textured feature space is generated by filtering the given textured images using isotropic and anisotropic filters, and analyzing their responses as multi-component conditional probability density functions. The texture segmentation is obtained by unifying region and boundary-based information as an improved Geodesic Active Contour Model. The defined objective function is minimized using a gradient-descent method where a level set approach is used to implement the obtained PDE. According to this PDE, the curve propagation towards the final solution is guided by boundary and region-based segmentation forces, and is constrained by a regularity force. The level set implementation is performed using a fast front propagation algorithm where topological changes are naturally handled. The performance of our method is demonstrated on a variety of synthetic and real textured frames.

Level Set Representations, the pioneering framework introduced by Osher and Sethian [14] is the most common choice for the implementation of variational frameworks in Computer Vision since it is implicit, intrinsic, parameter and topology free. However, many Computer vision applications refer to entities with physical meanings that follow a shape form with a certain degree of variability. In this paper, we propose a novel energetic form to introduce shape constraints to level set representations. This formulation exploits all advantages of these representations resulting on a very elegant approach that can deal with a large number of parametric as well as continuous transformations. Furthermore, it can be combined with existing well known level set-based segmentation approaches leading to paradigms that can deal with noisy, occluded and missing or physically corrupted data. Encouraging experimental results are obtained using synthetic and real images.

In these lecture notes we describe the construction, analysis, and application of ENO (Essentially Non-Oscillatory) and WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws and related Hamilton-Jacobi equations. ENO and WENO schemes are high order accurate nite di erence schemes designed for problems with piecewise smooth solutions containing discontinuities. The key idea lies at the approximation level, where a nonlinear adaptive procedure is used to automatically choose the locally smoothest stencil, hence avoiding crossing discontinuities in the interpolation procedure as much as possible. ENO and WENO schemes have been quite successful in applications, especially for problems containing both shocks and complicated smooth solution structures, such as compressible turbulence simulations and aeroacoustics. These lecture notes are basically self-contained. It is our hope that with these notes and with the help of the quoted references, the readers can understand the algorithms and code

This paper presents a volumetric formulation for the multi-view stereo problem which is amenable to a computationally tractable global optimisation using Graph-cuts. Our approach is to seek the optimal partitioning of 3D space into two regions labelled as ‘object’ and ‘empty’ under a cost functional consisting of the following two terms: (1) A term that forces the boundary between the two regions to pass through photo-consistent locations and (2) a ballooning term that inflates the ‘object ’ region. To take account of the effect of occlusion on the first term we use an occlusion robust photo-consistency metric based on Normalised Cross Correlation, which does not assume any geometric knowledge about the reconstructed object. The globally optimal 3D partitioning can be obtained as the minimum cut solution of a weighted graph.

We present an anisotropic mesh denoising algorithm that is effective, simple and fast. This is accomplished by filtering vertices of the mesh in the normal direction using local neighborhoods. Motivated by the impressive results of bilateral filtering for image denoising, we adopt it to denoise 3D meshes; addressing the specific issues required in the transition from two-dimensions to manifolds in three dimensions. We show that the proposed method successfully removes noise from meshes while preserving features. Furthermore, the presented algorithm excels in its simplicity both in concept and implementation.
