Following the theoretical studies of J.B. Robinson and H.W. Kuhn in the late 1940s and the early 1950s, G.B. Dantzig, R. Fulkerson, and S.M. Johnson demonstrated in 1954 that large instances of the TSP could be solved by linear programming. Their approach remains the only known tool for solving TSP instances with more than several hundred cities; over the years, it has evolved further through the work of M. Grötschel, S. Hong, M. Junger, P. Miliotis, D. Naddef, M. Padberg, W.R. Pulleyblank, G. Reinelt, G. Rinaldi, and others. We enumerate some of its refinements that led to the solution of a 13,509-city instance.

Abstract. This paper presents a new approach to finding minimum cuts in undirected graphs. The fundamental principle is simple: the edges in a graph’s minimum cut form an extremely small fraction of the graph’s edges. Using this idea, we give a randomized, strongly polynomial algorithm that finds the minimum cut in an arbitrarily weighted undirected graph with high probability. The algorithm runs in O(n 2 log 3 n) time, a significant improvement over the previous Õ(mn) time bounds based on maximum flows. It is simple and intuitive and uses no complex data structures. Our algorithm can be parallelized to run in �� � with n 2 processors; this gives the first proof that the minimum cut problem can be solved in ���. The algorithm does more than find a single minimum cut; it finds all of them. With minor modifications, our algorithm solves two other problems of interest. Our algorithm finds all cuts with value within a multiplicative factor of � of the minimum cut’s in expected Õ(n 2 � ) time, or in �� � with n 2 � processors. The problem of finding a minimum multiway cut of a graph into r pieces is solved in expected Õ(n 2(r�1) ) time, or in �� � with n 2(r�1) processors. We significantly improve known time bounds for solving the minimum cut problem on undirected graphs. We use a "semi-duality" between minimum cuts and maximum spanning tree packings combined with our previously developed random sampling techniques. We give a randomized (Monte Carlo) algorithm that finds a minimum cut in an m-edge, n-vertex graph with high probability in O(m log 3 n) time. We also give a simpler randomized algorithm that finds all minimum cuts with high probability in O(n 2 log n) time. This variant has an optimal RNC parallelization. Both variants improve on the previous best time bound of O(n 2 log 3 n). Chvátal introduced the idea of viewing cutting planes as a system for proving that every integral solution of a given set of linear inequalities satisfies another given linear inequality. This viewpoint has proven to be very useful in many studies of combinatorial and integer programming problems. The basic ingredient in these cutting-plane proofs is that for a polyhedron P and integral vector w, if max(wx]x ~ P, wx integer} = t, then wx ~ t is valid for all integral vectors in P. We consider the variant of this step where the requirement that wx be integer may be replaced by the requirement that #x be integer for some other integral vector #. The cutting-plane proofs thus obtained may be seen either as an abstraction of Gomory's mixed integer cutting-plane technique or as a proof version of a simple class of the disjunctive cutting planes studied by Balas and Jeroslow. Our main result is that for a given polyhedron P, the set of vectors that satisfy every cutting plane for P with respect to a specified subset of integer variables is again a polyhedron. This allows us to obtain a finite recursive procedure for generating the mixed integer hull of a polyhedron, analogous to the process of repeatedly taking Chvátal closures in the integer programming case. These results are illustrated with a number of examples from combinatorial optimization. Our work can be seen as a continuation of that of Nemhauser and Wolsey on mixed integer cutting planes.

This paper presents a set of techniques that makes constraint programming a technique of choice for solving small (up to 30 nodes) traveling salesman problems. These techniques include a propagation scheme to avoid intermediate cycles (a global constraint), a branching scheme and a redundant constraint that can be used as a bounding method. The resulting improvement is that we can solve problems twice larger than those solved previously with constraint programming tools. We evaluate the use of Lagrangean Relaxation to narrow the gap between constraint programming and other Operations Research techniques and we show that improved constraint propagation has now a place in the array of techniques that should be used to solve a traveling salesman problem. 1.

Recently, several new algorithms have been developed for the minimum cut problem. These algorithms are very different from the earlier ones and from each other and substantially improve worst-case time bounds for the problem. We conduct experimental evaluation the relative performance of these algorithms. In the process, we develop heuristics and data structures that substantially improve practical performance of the algorithms. We also develop problem families for testing minimum cut algorithms. Our work leads to a better understanding of practical performance of the minimum cut algorithms and produces very efficient codes for the problem.

Lov'asz and Schrijver (1991) described a semi-definite operator for generating strong valid inequalities for the 0-1 vectors in a prescribed polyhedron. Among their results, they showed that n iterations of the operator are sufficient to generate the convex hull of 0-1 vectors contained in a polyhedron in n-space. We give a simple example, having Chv'atal rank 1, that meets this worst case bound of n. We describe another example requiring n iterations even when combining the semi-definite and Gomory-Chv'atal operators. This second example is used to show that the standard linear programming relaxation of a k-city traveling salesman problem requires at least bk=8c iterations of the combined operator; this bound is best possible, up to a constant factor, as k + 1 iterations suffice. The first computer implementation of the Dantzig-Fulkerson-Johnson cutting-plane method for solving the traveling salesman problem, written by Martin, used subtour inequalities as well as cutting planes of Gomory’s type. The practice of looking for and using cuts that match prescribed templates in conjunction with Gomory cuts was continued in computer codes of Miliotis, Land, and Fleischmann. Grötschel, Padberg, and Hong advocated a different policy, where the template paradigm is the only source of cuts; furthermore, they argued for drawing the templates exclusively from the set of linear inequalities that induce facets of the TSP polytope. These policies were adopted in the work of Crowder and Padberg, in the work of Grötschel and Holland, and in the work of Padberg and Rinaldi; their computer codes produced the most impressive computational TSP successes of the nineteen eighties. Cutting plane algorithms have turned out to be practically successful computational tools in combinatorial optimization, in particular, when they are embedded in a branch and bound framework. Implementations of such "branch and cut" algorithms are rather complicated in comparison to many purely combinatorial algorithms. The purpose of this article is to give an introduction to cutting plane algorithms from an implementor's point of view. Special emphasis is given to control and data structures used in practically successful implementations of branch and cut algorithms. We also address the issue of parallelization. Finally, we point out that in important applications branch and cut algorithms are not only able to produce optimal solutions but also approximations to the optimum with certified good quality in moderate computation times. We close with an overview of successful practical applications in the literature.
