The Hippocratic Oath has guided the conduct of physicians for centuries. Inspired by its tenet of preserving privacy, we argue that future database systems must include responsibility for the privacy of data they manage as a founding tenet. We enunciate the key privacy principles for such Hippocratic database systems. We propose a strawman design for Hippocratic databases, identify the technical challenges and problems in designing such databases, and suggest some approaches that may lead to solutions. Our hope is that this paper will serve to catalyze a fruitful and exciting direction for future database research. 1

Traditional activities change in surprising ways when computermediated communication becomes a component of the activity system. In this descriptive study, we leverage two perspectives on social activity to understand the experiences of individuals who became active collaborators in Wikipedia, a prolific, cooperatively-authored online encyclopedia. Legitimate peripheral participation provides a lens for understanding participation in a community as an adaptable process that evolves over time. We use ideas from activity theory as a framework to describe our results. Finally, we describe how activity on the Wikipedia stands in striking contrast to traditional publishing and suggests a new paradigm for collaborative systems.

The field of ubiquitous computing envisages an era when the average consumer owns hundreds or thousands of mobile and embedded computing devices. These devices will perform actions based on the context of their users, and therefore ubiquitous systems will gather, collate and distribute much more personal information about individuals than computers do today. Much of this personal information will be considered private, and therefore mechanisms which allow users to control the dissemination of these data are vital. Location information is a particularly useful form of context in ubiquitous computing, yet its unconditional distribution can be very invasive.

The disparity between the code of election law and the code that comprises election equipment reflects inherent problems in the translation of social policies into computer procedures and overseeing processes. Elections are governed by intricate and voluminous codes of laws that, in turn, are (at least in part) transformed into the program code that governs the functionality of computer systems used in election processes. Voting systems reflect the interaction of technology and governance as grounded in the history of democracy in the locality (country or municipality) in which they reside. Variances of election law are therefore as great as the differences in history of democratic

Ubiquitous Computing technologies will have a wide impact on our daily lives in the future. Currently, most debates about social implications of these technologies concentrate on different aspects of privacy and data security. However, the authors of this paper argue that there is more to consider from a social perspective: In particular, the question is raised how people can maintain control in environments that are supposed to be totally automated. Hinting at the possibility that people may be subdued to machines ’ autonomous actions we introduce the term “Technology Paternalism”. We elaborate a working definition and illustrate the concept by looking at different examples based on current and future technology. We also dwell on the impacts of ubiquity and control of technology and suggest some approaches to assure a reasonable balance of interests such as a general “right for the last word”. Ubiquitous Computing „Ubiquitous Computing enhances computer use by making computers available throughout the physical environment, while making them effectively invisible to the user ” (Weiser, 1991). With this definition Mark Weiser became a founding father of a new wave of research and development, namely in the area of Ubiquitous Computing (hereafter: Ubicomp). Some scholars also refer to this domain as Ambient Intelligence or Pervasive Computing.

This paper presents an extended discussion of issues associated with the role of information privacy in IS research. This discussion was initiated in conjunction with a panel session at ICIS 2002. Following the conference, each of the panelists reworked and extended their position statements, and provided a commentary on the position statements of the other panelists. The paper is framed with head and tail pieces written by the panel chair. The result is a (unique and provocative) blend of opinion and commentary on a topic that is of importance to IS research in the globally networked society in which we all live. IS researchers will find research questions, research conundrums, and research advice in equal measure.

Abstract. We propose a novel approach for supporting privacy management that leverages community experience and expertise via the process of social navigation. Social navigation simplifies the often complex task of managing privacy settings, and systems that employ social navigation can advantageously complement user privacy management processes. We implemented our approach to privacy management in the Acumen system; Acumen uses social navigation to enable individuals to manage their Internet cookies both manually and automatically based on the behavior of others in the community. We present the Acumen system in detail and discuss data obtained from a six-week, preliminary deployment of Acumen. Lastly, we discuss challenges that systems implementing our approach must address if they are to be successful.

This thesis provides a novel approach when deciding what management structure will work best for a network service. In this thesis, the business concept of market uncertainty is linked to the technical aspects of designing and implementing network-based services. Using case studies for the telephone and Internet industry, this thesis shows that market uncertainty has influenced the management structure of network-based services. Using an option-like model to quantify the theory suggests how to maximize overall gain from the market's point-of-view while providing network-based services in highly uncertain markets. This thesis demonstrates that when market uncertainty is high, then management structure promoting parallel experimentation (such as end-2-end architecture) will better satisfy users ' needs because of increased innovation. However, when market uncertainty is low, the value gained from experimentation becomes unimportant compared to the technical and business advantages of a centralized management structures. Furthermore, this thesis quantifies how service providers learn from past generations of providing the service. In sum, this thesis provides a framework
