The Standard ML of New Jersey compiler has been under development for five years now. We have developed a robust and complete environment for Standard ML that supports the implementation of large software systems and generates efficient code. The compiler has also served as a laboratory for developing novel implementation techniques for a sophisticated type and module system, continuation based code generation, efficient pattern matching, and concurrent programming features.

Standard ML is an excellent language for many kinds of programming. It is safe, efficient, suitably abstract, and concise. There are many aspects of the language that work well. However, nothing is perfect: Standard ML has a few shortcomings. In some cases there are obvious solutions, and in other cases further research is required.

Denotational semantics is now used widely for the formal definition of programming languages but there is a lack of appropriate tools to support language development. General purpose language implementation systems are oriented to syntax with poor support for semantics. Specialised denotational semantics based systems correspond closely to the formalism but are rendered inflexible for language experimentation by their monolithic multiple stages Exploratory language development with formal definitions is better served by a unitary notation, encompassing syntax and semantics, which is close to but simpler than denotational semantics. Interactive implementation of the notation then facilitates language investigation through the direct execution of a formal definition as an interpreter for the defined language. Asynchronous/self-timed designs are beginning to attract attention as promising means of dealing with the complexity of modern VLSI technology. They are characterized by absence of global clocking and concurrency limited only by the data and control dependencies. They offer the advantages of simpler timing, the absence of clock distribution related problems, composability, opportunities for incremental improvement, and robustness. This dissertation addresses the issues underlying automating specification-driven design of self-timed circuits. An integrated collection of tools called the hopCP Design Environment is developed that facilitates the specification, simulation, analysis, and performance-directed synthesis of self-timed circuits. hopCP is a process-oriented concurrent HDL for the specification of asynchronous systems. We have designed a portable interface between shared-memory multiprocessors and Standard ML of New Jersey. The interface is based on the conventional kernel thread model and provides facilities that can be used to implement user-level thread packages. The interface supports experimentation with different thread scheduling policies and synchronization constructs. It has been ported to three different multiprocessors and used to construct a general purpose, user-level thread package. The interface is based on the conventional kernel thread model and provides facilities that can be used to implement user-level thread packages.
