Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) is an active research area with the promise for a high payoff in many business and scientific applications. The grand challenge of knowledge discovery in databases is to automatically process large quantities of raw data, identify the most significant and meaningful patterns, and present this knowledge in an appropriate form for achieving the user's goal. Knowledge discovery systems face challenging problems from the real-world databases which tend to be very large, redundant, noisy and dynamic. Each of these problems has been addressed to some extent within machine learning, but few, if any, systems address them all. Collectively handling these problems while producing useful knowledge efficiently and effectively is the main focus of the thesis. In this thesis, we develop an attribute-oriented rough set approach for knowledge discovery in databases. The method adopts the artificial intelligent "learning from examples" paradigm combined with rough...

This paper seeks programs which use the Net as a spearhead to bridge social and economic gaps across the Pacific Islands. It outlines some possibilities and issues, points of UN leadership and UN weaknesses, the major stakeholders, and local priorities. Antipodean Estonia has taken two great steps --- a computer for every twenty pupils, and a guarantee of Net access to every citizen. That is a model for isolated South Pacific islands

Culture is not ‘a decorative addendum to the “hard world ” of production and things, the icing on the cake of the material world’. (Hall, 1988) Many of us have learned to want to cleave to an order. This is a modernist dream. In one way or another, we are attached to the idea that if our lives, our organizations, our social theories or our societies, were ‘properly ordered’ then all would be well. And we take it that such ordering is possible, at least some of the time. So when we encounter complexity we tend to treat it as a distraction. We treat it as a sign of the limits to order. Or we think of it as evidence of failure. (Law, 1994: 4–5). What do Christmas, the Sex Pistols and a plank of wood have in common? While this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, I want to use the question as an entrance point to one of the more intractable issues in the social sciences, the relation between economy and culture, and which, with its recent

Recently, China has launched a major programme of motorway construction ± the National Trunk Highway System (NTHS). The present study analyses the impacts of this highway development programme on the pattern of accessibility gradients, trying to draw implications for regional growth. Obviously, this programme will bring about substantial improvements in accessibility across the nation. There is evidence, however, that highway investment exhibits diminishing returns over time. Greater improvements in the nodal accessibility of the major coastal cities, as compared with cities in interior and periphery provinces, in the initial stage of the
