We investigate the relationship between programming with constraints and database query languages. We show that efficient, declarative database programming can be combined with efficient constraint solving. The key intuition is that the generalization of a ground fact, or tuple, is a conjunction of constraints over a small number of variables. We describe the basic Constraint Query Language design principles and illustrate them with four classes of constraints: real polynomial inequalities, dense linear order inequalities, equalities over an infinite domain, and boolean equalities. For the analysis, we use quantifier elimination techniques from logic and the concept of data complexity from database theory. This framework is applicable to managing spatial data and can be combined with existing multidimensional searching algorithms and data structures.

Data sets in large applications are often too massive to fit completely inside the computer's internal memory. The resulting input/output communication (or I/O) between fast internal memory and slower external memory (such as disks) can be a major performance bottleneck. In this paper, we survey the state of the art in the design and analysis of external memory algorithms and data structures (which are sometimes referred to as "EM" or "I/O" or "outofcore" algorithms and data structures). EM algorithms and data structures are often designed and analyzed using the parallel disk model (PDM). The three machineindependent measures of performance in PDM are the number of I/O operations, the CPU time, and the amount of disk space. PDM allows for multiple disks (or disk arrays) and parallel CPUs, and it can be generalized to handle tertiary storage and hierarchical memory. We discuss several important paradigms for how to solve batched and online problems efficiently in external memory. Programming tools and environments are available for simplifying the programming task. The TPIE system (Transparent Parallel I/O programming Environment) is both easy to use and efficient in terms of execution speed. We report on some experiments using TPIE in the domain of spatial databases. The newly developed EM algorithms and data structures that incorporate the paradigms we discuss are significantly faster than methods currently used in practice.

This paper is a study of persistence in data structures. Ordinary data structures are ephemeral in the sense that a change to the structure destroys the old version, leaving only the new version available for use. In contrast, a persistent structure allows access to any version, old or new, at any time. We develop simple, systematic, and effiient techniques for making linked data structures persistent. We use our techniques to devise persistent forms of binary search trees with logarithmic access, insertion, and deletion times and O(1) space bounds for insertion and deletion.

In this paper, we give new techniques for designing efficient algorithms for computational geometry problems that are too large to be solved in internal memory, and we use these techniques to develop optimal and practical algorithms for a number of important largescale problems. We discuss our algorithms primarily in the contex't of single processor/single disk machines, a domain in which they are not only the first known optimal results but also of tremendous practical value. Our methods also produce the first known optimal algorithms for a wide range of twolevel and hierarchical muir{level memory models, including parallel models. The algorithms are optimal both in terms of I/0 cost and internal computation.

The database languages of these models include concepts from constraint programming (e.g., relational tuples are generated to conjunctions of constraints) and from objectoriented programming (e.g., objects are organized in class hierarchies). Let n be the size of the database, c the number of classes, B the page size on secondary storage, and t the size of the output of a query: (1) Indexing by one attribute in many constraint data models is equivalent to external dynamic interval management, which is a special case of external dynamic twodimensional range searching. We present a semidynamic data structure for this problem that has worstcase space O(n B) pages, query I O time O(logB n+t B) and O(logB n+(logB n) 2 B) amortized insert I O time. The development of constraint database query languages from logical database query languages has many similarities with the development of constraint logic programming from logic programming, but with the additional requirements of data efficient, setatatime, and bottomup evaluation. In this overview of constraint query languages (CQLs) we first present the framework of [41]. The principal idea is that: "the ktuple (or record) data type can be generalized by a conjunction of quantifierfree constraints over k variables". The data sets for many of today's computer applications are too large to fit within the computer's internal memory and must instead be stored on external storage devices such as disks. A major performance bottleneck can be the input/output communication (or I/O) between the external and internal memories. In this paper we discuss a variety of online data structures for external memory, some very old and some very new, such as hashing (for dictionaries), Btrees (for dictionaries and 1D range search), buffer trees (for batched dynamic problems), interval trees with weightbalanced Btrees (for stabbing queries), priority search trees (for 3sided 2D range search), and Rtrees and other spatial structures. We also discuss several open problems along the way.

Recently, several external memory techniques have been developed for a wide variety of graphics and visualization problems, including surface simplification, volume rendering, isosurface generation, ray tracing, surface reconstruction, and so on. This work has had significant impact given that in recent years there has been a rapid increase in the raw size of datasets. Several technological trends are contributing to this, such as the development of highresolution 3D scanners, and the need to visualize ASCIsize (Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative) datasets. Another important push for this kind of technology is the growing speed gap between main memory and caches, which penalizes algorithms that do not optimize for coherence of access. Because of these reasons, much research in computer graphics focuses on developing outofcore (and often cachefriendly) techniques. This paper surveys fundamental issues, current problems, and unresolved questions, and aims to provide graphics researchers and professionals with an effective knowledge of current techniques, as well as the foundation to develop novel techniques on their own. We present an extensive experimental study comparing the performance of four algorithms for the following orthogonal segment intersection problem: given a set of horizontal and vertical line segments in the plane, report all intersecting horizontalvertical pairs. The problem has important applications in VLSI layout and graphics, which are largescale in nature. The algorithms under evaluation are distribution sweep and three variations of plane sweep. Distribution sweep is specifically designed for the situations in which the problem is too large to be solved in internal memory, and theoretically has optimal I/O cost. Plane sweep is a wellknown and powerful technique in computational geometry, and is optimal for this particular problem in terms of internal computation. The three variations of plane sweep differ by the sorting methods (external vs. internal sorting) used in the preprocessing phase and the dynamic data structures (B tree vs. 234 tree) used in the sweeping ...
