The effective electric and magnetic material properties of a complex (twocomponent) mixture are addressed. The mixture is periodic in two directions and has a finite thickness in the third direction. Specifically, the explicit problem of finding the effective electric parameters for slab that has been reinforced by a layer (or several layers) of glass fiber is investigated. The homogenization problem is solved by a series expansion (multiplescale technique), and the numerical solution of the twodimensional vectorvalued problem is found by a FEM formulation. The FEM problem is nonstandard due to the periodic boundary conditions of the problem. Several numerical computations show that the most important parameter of the effective permittivity is the volume fraction of the guest material in the host. The reflection and transmission properties of the homogenized material are also addressed. 1

The equations for the electromagnetic field in an anisotropic media are written in a form containing only the transverse field components relative to a half plane boundary. The operator corresponding to this formulation is the electromagnetic system’s matrix. A constructive proof of the existence of directional wavefield decomposition with respect to the normal of the boundary is presented. In the process of defining the wavefield decomposition (wavesplitting), the resolvent set of the timeLaplace representation of the system’s matrix is analyzed. This set is shown to contain a strip around the imaginary axis. We construct a splitting matrix as a DunfordTaylor type integral over the resolvent of the unbounded operator defined by the electromagnetic system’s matrix. The splitting matrix commutes with the system’s matrix and the decomposition is obtained via a generalized eigenvalueeigenvector procedure. The decomposition is expressed in terms of components of the splitting matrix. The constructive solution to the question on the existence of a decomposition also generates an impedance mapping solution to an algebraic Riccati operator equation. This solution is the electromagnetic generalization in an anisotropic media of a DirichlettoNeumann map. Abstract—This paper presents a frequency domain technique for reconstructing the constitutive parameters of inhomogeneous planar layered chiral media based on an optimization approach. The measured co and crossreflection and transmission coefficients are used to extract profiles of electromagnetic parameters of the inhomogeneous chiral media. To identify the functions of constitutive parameters of the chiral media, Fourier series expansions and Genetic Algorithm (GA) are utilized. Since the optimization problem is highly nonlinear, enhanced GA in which a fuzzy system is used for improving the speed and accuracy of GA. The performance and feasibility of the proposed reconstruction method is proven using two typical examples. 1.

Abstract—A surface with periodic corrugations of sufficiently small periodicity is shown to be electromagnetically equivalent to an inhomogeneous transition region (slab).
