Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are difficult to program and usually run statically-installed software limiting its flexibility. To address this, we developed Agilla, a new middleware that increases network flexibility while simplifying application development. An Agilla network is deployed with no pre-installed application. Instead, users inject mobile agents that spread across nodes performing application-specific tasks. Each agent is autonomous, allowing multiple applications to share a network. Programming is simplified by allowing programmers to create agents using a high-level language. Linda-like tuple spaces are used for inter-agent communication and context discovery. This preserves each agent’s autonomy while providing a rich infrastructure for building complex applications, and marks the first time mobile agents and tuple spaces are used in a unified framework for WSNs. Our efforts resulted in an implementation for MICA2 motes and the development of several applications. The implementation consumes a mere 41.6KB of code and 3.59KB of data memory. An agent can migrate 5 hops in less than 1.1 seconds with 92 % reliability. In this paper, we present Agilla and provide a detailed evaluation of its implementation, an empirical study of its overhead, and a case study demonstrating its use. 1

More and more resources are becoming available on the Web, and there is a growing need for infrastructures that, based on advertised descriptions, are able to semantically match demands with supplies. We formalize general properties a matchmaker should have, then we present a matchmaking facilitator, compliant with desired properties. The system embeds a NeoClassic reasoner, whose structural subsumption algorithm has been modified to allow match categorization into potential and partial, and ranking of matches within categories. Experiments carried out show the good correspondence between users and system rankings.

The full potential of the web as a medium for electronic commerce can be realized only when multiple partners in a supply chain can route information among themselves in a seamless way. Commerce on the Internet is still far from being "friction-free" because business partners cannot exchange information about their business processes in an automated manner. In this paper, we propose the design for an eXchangeable Routing Language (XRL) using XML syntax. XML (eXtendible Markup Language) is a means for trading partners to exchange business data electronically. The novel contribution of our work is to show how XML can also be used to describe workflow process schemas to support flexible routing of documents in the Internet environment. The design of XRL is grounded in Petri nets, which is a wellknown formalism. By using this formalism, it is possible to analyze correctness and performance of workflows described in XRL. Architectures to facilitate inter-operation through loose and tight integration are also discussed. Examples illustrate how this approach can be used for implementing interorganizational electronic commerce applications. As a proof of concept we have also developed XRL/flower, a prototype implementation of a workflow management system based on XRL.

In electronic commerce, a satisfying buyer experience is a key competitive element. We show new techniques for better adapting interaction with an electronic catalog system to actual buying behavior. Our model replaces the sequential separation of needs identification and product brokering with a conversation in which both processes occur simultaneously. This conversation supports the buyer in formulating his or her needs, and in deciding which criteria to apply in selecting a product to buy. We have experimented with this approach in the area of travel planning and developed a system called SmartClient Travel which supports this process. It includes tools for need identification, visualization of alternatives, and choosing the most suitable one. The difference between auction and negotiation mechanisms has blurred with the arrival of the Internet and electronic commerce. The new media provide new opportunities and mechanisms to cooperate or to compete, taking advantage of computer power, the communication possibilities of the network, and the fact that millions of people and businesses are online simultaneously. We discuss the characteristics of different types of auctions and negotiations. This paper presents a new model for multi-issue negotiation under time constraints in an incomplete information setting. In this model the order in which issues are bargained over and agreements are reached is determined endogenously as part of the bargaining equilibrium. We show that the sequential implementation of the equilibrium agreement gives a better outcome than a simultaneous implementation when agents have like, as well as conflicting, time preferences. We also show that the equilibrium solution possesses the properties of uniqueness and symmetry, although it is not always Pareto-optimal.

Knowledge-based and collaborative-filtering recommender systems facilitate electronic commerce by helping users find appropriate products from large catalogs. This paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of both techniques and introduces the possibility of a hybrid recommender system that combines the two approaches. An approach is suggested in which knowledge-based techniques are used to bootstrap the collaborative filtering engine while its data pool is small, and the collaborative filter is used as a postfilter for the knowledge-based recommender.

This paper presents a new model for multi-issue negotiation under time constraints in an incomplete information setting. The issues to be bargained over can be associated with a single good/service or multiple goods/services. In our agenda-based model, the order in which issues are bargained over and agreements are reached is determined endogenously, as part of the bargaining equilibrium. In this context we determine the conditions under which agents have similar preferences over the implementation scheme and the conditions under which they have conflicting preferences. Our analysis shows the existence of equilibrium even when both players have uncertain information about each other, and each agent's information is its private knowledge. We also study the properties of the equilibrium solution and determine conditions under which it is unique, symmetric, and Pareto-optimal.

The literature on electronic commerce (EC) and electronic marketplaces has long recognized the importance of different kinds of intermediaries and the different functions they serve [5]. The Internet is most often discussed in connection with digital intermediaries [76], as the displacement of traditional intermediaries. In this research, we propose a new conceptual framework for understanding how competition in business-tobusiness (B2B) EC in the presence of information technology (IT) innovations changes firm-level strategy choices and the structure of the marketplace. We also identify and discuss the economic forces that lead to these changes. In this context, we further describe a recurring pattern of intermediation, disintermediation and reintermediation through an "IDR framework."
