This article presents a theory in which automatization is construed as the acquisition of a domain-specific knowledge base, formed of separate representations, instances, of each exposure to the task. Processing is considered automatic if it relies on retrieval of stored instances, which will occur only after practice in a consistent environment. Practice is important because it increases the amount retrieved and the speed of retrieval; consistency is important because it ensures that the retrieved instances will be useful. The theory accounts quantitatively for the power-function speed-up and predicts a power-function reduction in the standard deviation that is constrained to have the same exponent as the power function for the speed-up. The theory accounts for qualitative properties as well, explaining how some may disappear and others appear with practice. More generally, it provides an alternative to the modal view of automaticity, arguing that novice performance is limited by a lack of knowledge rather than a scarcity of resources. The focus on learning avoids many problems with the modal view that stem from its focus on resource limitations. Automaticity is an important phenomenon in everyday men-tal life. Most of us recognize that we perform routine activities quickly and effortlessly, with little thought and conscious aware-ness--in short, automatically (James, 1890). As a result, we of-ten perform those activities on "automatic pilot " and turn our minds to other things. For example, we can drive to dinner while conversing in depth with a visiting scholar, or we can make coffee while planning dessert. However, these benefits may be offset by costs. The automatic pilot can lead us astray, caus-ing errors and sometimes catastrophes (Reason & Myceilska, 1982). If the conversation is deep enough, we may find ourselves and the scholar arriving at the office rather than the restaurant, or we may discover that we aren't sure whether we put two or three scoops of coffee into the pot. Automaticity is also an important phenomenon in skill acqui-sition (e.g., Bryan & Harter, 1899). Skills are thought to consist largely of collections of automatic processes and procedures

J. hanger (1978) remains true today: that much of contemporary psychological research is based on the assumption that people are consciously and systematically processing incoming information in order to construe and interpret their world and to plan and engage in courses of action. This paper re-assesses the role of real-time video as a technology to support interpersonal communications at distance. We review three distinct hypotheses about the role of video in the co-ordination of conversational content and process. For each hypothesis, we identify design implications and outstanding research questions derived from current findings. We first evaluate the non-verbal communication hypothesis, namely the prevailing assumption that the role of video is to supplement speech, and embodied in applications such as videoconferencing and videophone. We conclude that previous work has overestimated the importance of video at the expense of audio. This finding has strong implications for the implementation of such systems, and we make recommendations about both synchronisation and bandwidth allocation. It is argued that working memory limitations are best defined in terms of the complexity of relations that can be processed in parallel. Relational complexity is related to processing loads in problem solving, and discriminates between higher animal species, as well as between children of different ages. Complexity is defined by the number of dimensions, or sources of variation, that are related. A unary relation has one argument and one source of variation, because its argument can be instantiated in only one way at a time. A binary relation has two arguments, and two sources of variation, because two argument instantiations are possible at once. Similarly, a ternary relation is three dimensional, a quaternary relation is four dimensional, and so on. Dimensionality is related to number of chunks, because both attributes on dimensions and chunks are independent units of information of arbitrary size. Empirical studies of working memory limitations indicate a soft limit which corresponds to processing one quaternary relation in parallel. More complex concepts are processed by segmentation or conceptual chunking. Segmentation entails breaking tasks into components which do not exceed processing capacity, and which are processed serially. Conceptual chunking entails "collapsing" representations to reduce their dimensionality and consequently their processing load, but at the cost of making some relational information inaccessible. Parallel distributed processing implementations of relational representations show that relations with more arguments entail a higher computational cost, which corresponds to empirical observations of higher processing loads in humans. Early studies of intuitive judgment and decision making conducted with the late Amos Tversky are reviewed in the context of two related concepts: an analysis of accessibility, the ease with which thoughts come to mind; a distinction between effortless intuition and deliberate reasoning. Intuitive thoughts, like percepts, are highly accessible. Determinants and consequences of accessibility help explain the central results of prospect theory, framing effects, the heuristic process of attribute substitution, and the characteristic biases that result from the substitution of nonextensional for extensional attributes. Variations in the accessibility of rules explain the occasional corrections of intuitive judgments. The study of biases is compatible with a view of intuitive thinking and decision making as generally skilled and successful.

A theory is described that provides a detailed model of how people recall serial lists of items. This theory is based on the Adaptive Character of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) production system (J. R. Anderson, 1993). It assumes that serial lists are represented as hierarchical structures consisting of Copyright 1997 by the American Psychological Association, Inc. 0033-295X/97/$3,00 groups and items within groups. Declarative knowledge units encode the position of items and of groups within larger groups. Production rules use this positional information to organize the serial recall of a list of items. In ACT-R, memory access depends on a limited-capacity activation process, and errors can occur in the contents of recall because of a partial matching process. These limitations conspire in a number of ways to produce the limitations in immediate memory span: As the span increases, activation must be divided among more elements, activation decays more with longer recall times, and there are more opportunities for positional and acoustic confusions. The theory is shown to be capable of predicting both latency and error patterns in serial recall. It addresses effects of serial position, list length, delay, word length, positional confusion, acoustic confusion, and articulatory suppression. In this article we describe our efforts to come to a detailed process understanding of the task involved in reproducing a serial list of items. This article presents a theory that inte~ates space-based and object-based approaches to visual attention. The theory puts together M. P. van Oeffelen and P. G. Vos's ( 1982, 1983) COntour DEtector (CODE) theory of perceptual grouping by proximity with C. Bundesen's (1990) theory of visual attention (TVA). CODE provides input to TVA, accounting for spatially based between-object selection, and TVA converts the input to output, accounting for feature- and category-based withinobject selection. CODE clusters nearby items into perceptual groups that are both perceptual objects and regions of space, thereby integrating object-based and space-based approaches to attention. The combined theory provides a quantitative account of the effects of grouping by proximity and dis~nce between items on reaction time and accuracy data in 7 empirical situations that shaped the current literature on visual spatial attention. Beth and Alan are sitting at a Fifth Avenue outdoors restaurant in Manhattan. Alan is telling Beth an exciting story about his vacation in Nice. Alan presents the story through gesture and speech. Then Beth's arm starts moving and her neck stiffens. We, the viewers, know that she's surprised to see an elephant in the middle of Manhattan, and that in 460 milliseconds her arm and hand motion will turn into a welldefined deictic gesture, her eyebrows will rise, and her mouth will open with surprise, at which point Alan will most certainly recognize the signs and look over at the elephant. But right now, at t-minus-460 milliseconds, Beth's gesture is barely recognizable as a communicative action, so Alan doesn't know for sure. And thus, before that all happens, in the next 460 milliseconds, Alan has to decide what to do about Beth's behavior. Should he stop telling his story?
