NoteCards is a general hypermedia environment designed to help people work with ideas. Its intended users are authors, designers, and other intellectual laborers engaged in analyzing information, designing artifacts, and generally processing ideas. The system provides these users with a variety of hypermedia-based tools for collecting, representing, managing, interrelating, and communicating ideas. This paper presents the NoteCards system as a foil against which to explore some of the major limitations of the current generation of hypermedia systems. In doing so, this paper highlights seven of the major issues that must be addressed in the next generation of hypermedia systems. These seven issues are: search and query, composite nodes, virtual structures, computational engines, versioning, collaborative work, and tailorability. For each of these issues, the papers describes the limitations inherent in NoteCards and the prospects for doing improving the situation in future systems.

This paper suggests modifications to the POSTGRES rules system (PRS) to increase its usability and function. Specifically, we suggest changing the rule syntax to a more powerful one and propose additional keywords, introduce the notion of rulesets whose purpose is to increase the user’s control over the rule activation process, and expand the versioning facility to support a broader range of applications than is currently possible. 1.

A Text-Based Intelligent System should provide more in-depth information about the contents of its corpus than does a standard information retrieval system, while at the same time avoiding the complexity and resource-consuming behavior of detailed text understanders. Instead of focusing on discovering documents that pertain to some topic of interest to the user, an approach is introduced based on the criterion of directionality (e.g., Is the agent in favor of, neutral, or opposed to the event?). A method is described for coercing sentence meanings into a metaphoric model such that the only semantic interpretation needed in order to determine the directionality of a sentence is done with respect to the model. This interpretation method is designed to be an integrated component of a hybrid information access system. 1 Introduction In the light of the increasing availability of computer-accessible full text, an important goal of a Text-Based Intelligent System is to provide a me...

Unfamiliarity with search tactics creates difficulties for many users of online retrieval systems. User observations indicate that even experienced searchers use vocabulary incorrectly and rarely reformulate their queries. To address these problems, an expert system for online search assistance was developed. This prototype automatically reformulates queries to improve the search results, and ranks the retrieved passages to speed the identification of relevant information. Users' search performance using the expert system was compared with their search performance on their own, and their search performance using an online thesaurus. The following conclusions were reached: 1) The expert system significantly reduced the number of queries necessary to find relevant passages compared with the user searching alone or with the thesaurus. 2) The expert system produced marginally significant improvements in precision compared with the user searching on their own. There was no significant difference in the recall achieved by the three system configurations. 3) Overall, the expert system ranked relevant passages above irrelevant passages.

Abstract. An important problem for information access systems is that of organizing large sets of documents that have been retrieved in response to a query. Text categorization and text clustering are two natural language processing tasks whose results can be applied to document organization. This chapter describes user interfaces that use categories and clusters to organize retrieval results, and examines the relationship between the two. 1 1.

By determining classes of information processing tasks which are suitable for artificial intelligence approaches we outline an architectural structure for large systems. In that structure processing modules become specialized. We argue that artificial intelligence programs should remain simple and constrained to a single ontology. Tasks are typed as focusing, pruning, fusion, and reduction. There are also control tasks associated with effective resource management. Their results are then composable by higher level applications, which have to solve problems involving multiple subtasks. The artificial intelligence modules will need a machine-friendly interface to support those applications. This interface must provide good communication, while encapsulating the artificial intelligence tasks, so that the complexity of the composed system is not much greater than that of the individual subtasks. The corresponding architecture is a generalization of a server-client model. The partitioning e...
