The influence of prior experience on some forms of behavior and cognition is drastically affected by damage to the hippocampal system. However, if the hippocampal system is left intact both during the experience and for a period of time thereafter, subsequent damage can have much less or even no effect. Such findings suggest that memory traces change over time in a way that makes them less dependent on the hippocampal system. This process of change has often been called consolidation. Consolidation is a very gradual process; in humans, it appears to span up to 15 years. This article asks what consolidation is and why it occurs. We take as our point of departure the view that the initial memory trace that results from a relevant experience consists of changes to the strengths of the connections among neurons in the hippocampal system. Abstract: Human agents draw a variety of inferences effortlessly, spontaneously, and with remarkable efficiency — as though these inferences are a reflex response of their cognitive apparatus. Furthermore, these inferences are drawn with reference to a large body of background knowledge. This remarkable human ability seems paradoxical given the results about the complexity of reasoning reported by researchers in artificial intelligence. It also poses a challenge for cognitive science and computational neuroscience: How can a system of simple and slow neuron-like elements represent a large body of systematic knowledge and perform a range of inferences with such speed? We describe a computational model that is a step toward addressing the cognitive science challenge and resolving the artificial intelligence paradox. We show how a connectionist network can encode millions of facts and rules involving n-ary predicates and variables, and perform a class of inferences in a few hundred msec. Efficient reasoning requires the rapid representation and propagation of dynamic bindings. Our model achieves this by i) representing dynamic bindings as the synchronous firing of appropriate nodes, ii) rules as interconnection patterns

We describe a distributed model of information processing and memory and apply it to the representation of general and specific information. The model consists of a large number of simple processing elements which send excitatory and inhibitory signals to each other via modifiable connections. Information processing is thought of as the process whereby patterns of activation are formed over the units in the model through their excitatory and inhibitory interactions. The memory trace of a processing event is the change or increment to the strengths of the interconnections that results from the processing event. The traces of separate events are superimposed on each other in the values of the connection strengths that result from the entire set of traces stored in the memory. The model is applied to a number of findings related to the question of whether we store abstract representations or an enumeration of specific experiences in memory. The model simulates the results of a number of important experiments which have been taken as evidence for the enumeration of specific experiences. We present a theoretical framework for understanding the roles of the hippocampus and neocortex in learning and memory. This framework incorporates a theme found in many theories of hippocampal function, that the hippocampus is responsible for developing conjunctive representations binding together stimulus elements into a unitary rep- resentation that can later be recalled from partial input cues. This idea appears problematic, however, because it is contradicted by the fact that hippocampally lesioned rats can learn nonlinear discrimination problems that require conjunctive representations. Our framework accommodates this finding by establishing a principled division of labor between the cortex and hippocampus, where the cortex is responsible for slow learning that integrates over multiple experiences to extract generalities, while the hippocampus performs rapid learning of the arbitrary contents of individual experiences. This framework shows that nonlinear discrimination problems are not good tests of hippocampal function, and suggests that tasks involving rapid, incidental conjunctive learning are better. We implement this framework in a computational neural network model, and show that it can account for a wide range of data in animal learning, thus validating our theoretical ideas, and providing a number of insights and predictions about these learning phenomena.

Human episodic memory provides a seemingly unlimited storage for everyday experiences, and a retrieval system that allows us to access the experiences with partial activation of their components. The system is believed to consist of a fast, temporary storage in the hippocampus, and a slow, longterm storage within the neocortex. This paper presents a neural network model of the hippocampal episodic memory inspired by Damasio's idea of Convergence Zones. The model consists of a layer of perceptual feature maps and a binding layer. A perceptual feature pattern is coarse coded in the binding layer, and stored on the weights between layers. A partial activation of the stored features activates the binding pattern, which in turn reactivates the entire stored pattern. For many configurations of the model, a theoretical lower bound for the memory capacity can be derived, and it can be an order of magnitude or higher than the number of all units in the model, and several orders of magnitude higher than the number of binding-layer units. Computational simulations further indicate that the average capacity is an order of magnitude larger than the theoretical lower bound, and making the connectivity between layers sparser causes an even further increase in capacity. Simulations also show that if more descriptive binding patterns are used, the errors tend to be more plausible (patterns are confused with other similar patterns), with a slight cost in capacity. Is attention a purely perceptual process or is it in any way related to motor control? The aim of this article is to show that attention puts similar demands on a cognitive system as motor control and present evidence supporting the view that similar mechanisms operate in the two processes. A computational model of attention is presented that uses habituation as well as classical and instrumental conditioning to explain a number of attentional processes. Evidence from neurophysiology is reviewed that suggest that attention is controlled in a way similar to actions. This view makes it possible to adapt traditional learning theoretical mechanisms to the control of attention. Computer simulations are presented that illustrates the operation of the model.

We readily acquire memories of events and situations in our daily lives. There is a broad consensus that the hippocampal system (HS) plays a critical role in the encoding and retrieval of such "episodic" memories. But how the HS subserves this mnemonic function is not fully understood. This article presents a computational model, SMRITI,that demonstrates how a transient pattern of activity representing an event can be transformed rapidly into a persistent and robust memory trace as a result of long-term potentiation within structures whose architecture and circuitry resemble those of the HS. Predictions and implications of the model are discussed. We present an overview of our computational approach towards understanding the different contributions of the neocortex and hippocampus in learning and memory. The approach is based on a set of principles derived from converging biological, psychological, and computational constraints. The most central principles are that the neocortex employs a slow learning rate and overlapping distributed representations to extract the general statistical structure of the environment, while the hippocampus learns rapidly using separated representations to encode the details of specific events while suffering minimal interference. Additional principles concern the nature of learning (error-driven and Hebbian), and recall of information via pattern completion.
