The tutorial starts with an overview of the concepts of VC dimension and structural risk minimization. We then describe linear Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for separable and nonseparable data, working through a nontrivial example in detail. We describe a mechanical analogy, and discuss when SVM solutions are unique and when they are global. We describe how support vector training can be practically implemented, and discuss in detail the kernel mapping technique which is used to construct SVM solutions which are nonlinear in the data. We show how Support Vector machines can have very large (even infinite) VC dimension by computing the VC dimension for homogeneous polynomial and Gaussian radial basis function kernels. While very high VC dimension would normally bode ill for generalization performance, and while at present there exists no theory which shows that good generalization performance is guaranteed for SVMs, there are several arguments which support the observed high accuracy of SVMs, which we review. Results of some experiments which were inspired by these arguments are also presented. We give numerous examples and proofs of most of the key theorems. There is new material, and I hope that the reader will find that even old material is cast in a fresh light.

In this tutorial we give an overview of the basic ideas underlying Support Vector (SV) machines for function estimation. Furthermore, we include a summary of currently used algorithms for training SV machines, covering both the quadratic (or convex) programming part and advanced methods for dealing with large datasets. Finally, we mention some modifications and extensions that have been applied to the standard SV algorithm, and discuss the aspect of regularization from a SV perspective.

Large linear systems of saddle point type arise in a wide variety of applications throughout computational science and engineering. Due to their indefiniteness and often poor spectral properties, such linear systems represent a significant challenge for solver developers. In recent years there has been a surge of interest in saddle point problems, and numerous solution techniques have been proposed for solving this type of systems. The aim of this paper is to present and discuss a large selection of solution methods for linear systems in saddle point form, with an emphasis on iterative methods for large and sparse problems.

When computing eigenvalues of sym metric matrices and singular values of general matrices in finite precision arithmetic we in general only expect to compute them with an error bound proportional to the product of machine precision and the norm of the matrix. In particular, we do not expect to compute tiny eigenvalues and singular values to high relative accuracy. There are some important classes of matrices where we can do much better, including bidiagonal matrices, scaled diagonally dominant matrices, and scaled diagonally dominant definite pencils. These classes include many graded matrices, and all sym metric positive definite matrices which can be consistently ordered (and thus all symmetric positive definite tridiagonal matrices). In particular, the singular values and eigenvalues are determined to high relative precision independent of their magnitudes, and there are algorithms to compute them this accurately. The eigenvectors are also determined more accurately than for general matrices, and may be computed more accurately as well. This work extends results of Kahan and Demmel for bidiagonal and tridiagonal matrices.

Abstract. This paper concerns largescale general (nonconvex) nonlinear programming when first and second derivatives of the objective and constraint functions are available. A method is proposed that is based on finding an approximate solution of a sequence of unconstrained subproblems parameterized by a scalar parameter. The objective function of each unconstrained subproblem is an augmented penaltybarrier function that involves both primal and dual variables. Each subproblem is solved with a modified Newton method that generates search directions from a primaldual system similar to that proposed for interior methods. The augmented penaltybarrier function may be interpreted as a merit function for values of the primal and dual variables. An inertiacontrolling symmetric indefinite factorization is used to provide descent directions and directions of negative curvature for the augmented penaltybarrier merit function. A method suitable for large problems can be obtained by providing a version of this factorization that will treat large sparse indefinite systems.

Incomplete LU factorization preconditioners have been surprisingly successful for many cases of general nonsymmetric and indefinite matrices. However, their failure rate is still too high for them to be useful as blackbox library software for general matrices. Besides fatal breakdowns due to zero pivots, the major causes of failure are inaccuracy, and instability of the triangular solves. When there are small pivots, both these problems can occur, but these problems can also occur without small pivots. Through examples from actual problems, this paper shows how these problems evince themselves, how these problems can be detected, and how these problems can sometimes be circumvented through pivoting, reordering, scaling, perturbing diagonal elements, and preserving symmetric structure. The goal of this paper is to gain a better practical understanding of ILU preconditioners and help improve their reliability.
