In this paper we propose a new equivalence relation for dynamical and control systems called bisimulation. As the name implies this definition is inspired by the fundamental notion of bisimulation introduced by R. Milner for labeled transition systems. It is however, more subtle than its namesake in concurrency theory, mainly due to the fact that here, one deals with relations on manifolds. We further show that the bisimulation relations for dynamical and control systems defined in this paper are captured by the notion of abstract bisimulation of Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel (JNW). This result not only shows that our equivalence notion is on the right track, but also confirms that the abstract bisimulation of JNW is general enough to capture equivalence notions in the domain of continuous systems. We believe that the unification of the bisimulation relation for labeled transition systems and dynamical systems under the umbrella of abstract bisimulation, as achieved in this work, is a first step towards a unified approach to modeling of and reasoning about the dynamics of discrete and continuous structures in computer science and control theory.

The aim of this paper is to harness the mathematical machinery around presheaves for the purposes of process calculi. Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel proposed a general definition of bisimulation from open maps. Here we show that open-map bisimulations within a range of presheaf models are congruences for a general process language, in which CCS and related languages are easily encoded. The results are then transferred to traditional models for processes. By first establishing the congruence results for presheaf models, abstract, general proofs of congruence properties can be provided and the awkwardness caused through traditional models not always possessing the cartesian liftings, used in the break-down of process operations, are side-stepped. The abstract results are applied to show that hereditary history-preserving bisimulation is a congruence for CCS-like languages to which is added a refinement operator on event structures as proposed by van Glabbeek and Goltz.

We describe in full detail a solution to the problem of proving the cut elimination theorem for FILL, a variant of (multiplicative and exponential-free) Linear Logic introduced by Hyland and de Paiva. Hyland and de Paiva's work used a term assignment system to describe FILL and barely sketched the proof of cut elimination. In this paper, as well as correcting a small mistake in their paper and extending the system to deal with exponentials, we introduce a di#erent formal system describing the intuitionistic character of FILL and we provide a full proof of the cut elimination theorem. The formal system is based on a notion of dependency between formulae within a given proof and seems of independent interest. The procedure for cut elimination applies to (classical) multiplicative Linear Logic, and we can (with care) restrict our attention to the subsystem FILL. The fundamental notion of bisimulation has inspired various notions of system equivalences in concurrency theory. Many notions of bisimulation for various discrete systems have been recently unified in the abstract category theoretical formulation of bisimulation due to Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel. In this paper, we adopt their framework and unify the notions of bisimulation equivalences for discrete, continuous dynamical and control systems. This shows that our equivalence notion is on the right track, but also confirms that abstract bisimulation is general enough to capture equivalence notions in the domain of continuous systems. We present a verification of a distributed sorting algorithm in ALF, an implementation of Martin Löf's type theory. The implementation is expressed as a program in a priortized version of CBS, (the Calculus of Broadcasting Systems) which we have implemented in ALF. The specification is expressed in terms of an ALF type which represents the set of all sorted lists and an HML (Hennesey-Milner Logic) formula which expresses that the sorting program will input any number of data until it hears a value triggering the program to begin outputting the data in a sorted fashion. We gain expressive power from the type theory by inheriting the language of data, state expressions, and propositions.

The notion of bisimulation has escaped the world of continuous, and subsequently, hybrid systems. Recently, notions of bisimulation for continuous systems have been developed based on the categorical framework of Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel. In this paper, we combine known notions of bisimulation for discrete systems with recent notions for continuous systems and develop novel but natural notions of bisimulation for hybrid systems.
