Abstract. This paper is motivated by the need for fundamental understanding of ultimate limits of bandwidth efficient delivery of higher bit-rates in digital wireless communications and to also begin to look into how these limits might be approached. We examine exploitation of multi-element array (MEA) technology, that is processing the spatial dimension (not just the time dimension) to improve wireless capacities in certain applications. Specifically, we present some basic information theory results that promise great advantages of using MEAs in wireless LANs and building to building wireless communication links. We explore the important case when the channel characteristic is not available at the transmitter but the receiver knows (tracks) the characteristic which is subject to Rayleigh fading. Fixing the overall transmitted power, we express the capacity offered by MEA technology and we see how the capacity scales with increasing SNR for a large but practical number, n, of antenna elements at both transmitter and receiver. We investigate the case of independent Rayleigh faded paths between antenna elements and find that with high probability extraordinary capacity is available. Compared to the baseline n = 1 case, which by Shannon’s classical formula scales as one more bit/cycle for every 3 dB of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increase, remarkably with MEAs, the scaling is almost like n more bits/cycle for each 3 dB increase in SNR. The history of the theory and practice of quantization dates to 1948, although similar ideas had appeared in the literature as long ago as 1898. The fundamental role of quantization in modulation and analog-to-digital conversion was first recognized during the early development of pulsecode modulation systems, especially in the 1948 paper of Oliver, Pierce, and Shannon. Also in 1948, Bennett published the first high-resolution analysis of quantization and an exact analysis of quantization noise for Gaussian processes, and Shannon published the beginnings of rate distortion theory, which would provide a theory for quantization as analog-to-digital conversion and as data compression. Beginning with these three papers of fifty years ago, we trace the history of quantization from its origins through this decade, and we survey the fundamentals of the theory and many of the popular and promising techniques for quantization.

We address the problem of distributed source coding, i.e. compression of correlated sources that are not co-located and/or cannot communicate with each other to minimize their joint description cost. In this work we tackle the related problem of compressing a source that is correlated with another source which is however available only at the decoder. In contrast to prior information-theoretic approaches, we introduce a new constructive and practical framework for tackling the problem based on the judicious incorporation of channel coding principles into this source coding problem. We dub our approach as DIstributed Source Coding Using Syndromes (DISCUS). We focus in this paper on trellis-structured consructions of the framework to illustrate its utility. In this paper we review the most peculiar and interesting information-theoretic and communications features of fading channels. We first describe the statistical models of fading channels which are frequently used in the analysis and design of communication systems. Next, we focus on the information theory of fading channels, by emphasizing capacity as the most important performance measure. Both single-user and multiuser transmission are examined. Further, we describe how the structure of fading channels impacts code design, and finally overview equalization of fading multipath channels.

Per-Survivor Processing (PSP) provides a general framework for the approximation of Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) algorithms whenever the presence of unknown quantities prevents the precise use of the classical Viterbi algorithm. This principle stems from the idea that data-aided estimation of unknown parameters may be embedded into the structure of the Viterbi algorithm itself. Among the numerous possible applications, we concentrate here on (a) adaptive MLSE, (b) simultaneous Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) decoding and phase synchronization, (c) adaptive Reduced State Sequence Estimation (RSSE). As a matter of fact, PSP is interpretable as a generalization of decision feedback techniques of RSSE to decoding in the presence of unknown parameters. We apply coset codes to adaptive modulation in fading channels. Adaptive modulation is a powerful technique to improve the energy efficiency and increase the data rate over a fading channel. Coset codes are a natural choice to use with adaptive modulation since the channel coding and modulation designs are separable. Therefore, trellis and lattice codes designed for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels can be superimposed on adaptive modulation for fading channels, with the same approximate coding gains. We first describe the methodology for combining coset codes with a general class of adaptive modulation techniques. We then apply this methodology to a spectrally efficient adaptive M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) to obtain trellis-coded adaptive MQAM. We present analytical and simulation results for this design which show an effective coding gain of 3 dB relative to uncoded adaptive MQAM for a simple four-state trellis code, and an effective 3.6-dB coding gain for an eight-state trellis code. More complex trellis codes are shown to achieve higher gains. We also compare the performance of trellis-coded adaptive MQAM to that of coded modulation with built-in time diversity and fixed-rate modulation. The adaptive method exhibits a power savings of up to 20 dB.

Research on information embedding and particularly information hiding techniques has received considerable attention within the last years due to its potential application in multimedia security. Digital watermarking, which is an information hiding technique where the embedded information is robust against malicious or accidental attacks, might offer new possibilities to enforce the copyrights of multimedia data. In this article, the specific case of information embedding into independent identically distributed (IID) data and attacks by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is considered. The original data is not available to the decoder. For Gaussian data, Costa proposed already in 1983 a scheme that theoretically achieves the capacity of this communication scenario. However, Costa's scheme is not practical. Thus, several research groups have proposed suboptimal practical communication schemes based on Costa's idea. The goal of this artical is to give a complete performance analysis of the scalar Costa scheme (SCS) which is a suboptimal technique using scalar embedding and reception functions. Information theoretic bounds and simulation results with state-of-the-art coding techniques are compared. Further, reception after amplitude scaling attacks and the invertibility of SCS embedding are investigated. The idea of using knowledge of the current channel fading values to optimize the transmitted signal in wireless communication systems has attracted substantial research attention in recent years. However, the practicality of this adaptive signaling has been questioned due to the variation of the wireless channel over time, which results in a different channel at the time of data transmission than at the time of channel estimation. By characterizing the effects of fading channel variation on the adaptive signaling paradigm, it is demonstrated here that these misgivings are well founded, as the channel variation greatly alters the nature of the problem. The main goal of this paper is to employ this characterization of the effects of the channel variation to design adaptive signaling schemes that are effective for the time-varying channel. The design of uncoded adaptive quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) systems is considered first, and it demonstrates the need to consider the channel variation in system design. This is followed by the main contribution of this paper; using only a single outdated fading estimate when neither the Doppler frequency nor the exact shape of the autocorrelation function of the channel fading process is known, adaptive trellis-coded modulation schemes are designed that can provide a significant increase in bandwidth efficiency over their nonadaptive counterparts on time-varying channels.

Abstract — We present a bandwidth-efficient channel coding scheme that has an overall structure similar to binary turbo codes, but employs trellis-coded modulation (TCM) codes (including multidimensional codes) as component codes. The combination of turbo codes with powerful bandwidth-efficient component codes leads to a straightforward encoder structure, and allows iterative decoding in analogy to the binary turbo decoder. However, certain special conditions may need to be met at the encoder, and the iterative decoder needs to be adapted to the decoding of the component TCM codes. The scheme has been investigated for 8-PSK, 16-QAM, and 64-QAM modulation schemes with varying overall bandwidth efficiencies. A simple code choice based on the minimal distance of the punctured component code has also been performed. The interset distances of the partitioning tree can be used to fix the number of coded and uncoded bits. We derive the symbol-by-symbol MAP component decoder operating in the log domain, and apply methods of reducing decoder complexity. Simulation results are presented and compare the scheme with traditional TCM as well as turbo codes with Gray mapping. The results show that the novel scheme is very powerful, yet of modest complexity since simple component codes are used. Index Terms—Decoding, iterative methods, trellis-coded modulation. I.
