In this work, we study the expressive power of variants of Klaim, an experimental language with programming primitives for global computing that combines the process algebra approach with the coordinationoriented one. Klaim has proved to be suitable for programming a wide range of distributed applications with agents and code mobility, and has been implemented on the top of a runtime system based on Java. The expressivity of its constructs is tested by distilling from it some (more and more foundational) calculi and studying the encoding of each of the considered languages into a simpler one. An encoding of the asynchronous #calculus into one of these calculi is also presented.

In higherorder process calculi the values exchanged in communications may contain processes. A core calculus of higherorder concurrency is studied; it has only the operators necessary to express higherorder communications: input prefix, process output, and parallel composition. By exhibiting a nearly deterministic encoding of Minsky Machines, the calculus is shown to be Turing Complete and therefore its termination problem is undecidable. Strong bisimilarity, however, is proved to be decidable. Further, the main forms of strong bisimilarity for higherorder processes (higherorder bisimilarity, context bisimilarity, normal bisimilarity, barbed congruence) coincide. They also coincide with their asynchronous versions. A sound and complete axiomatization of bisimilarity is given. Finally, bisimilarity is shown to become undecidable if at least four static (i.e., toplevel) restrictions are added to the calculus.

We develop a semantics theory for SAP, a variant of Levi and Sangiorgi’s Safe Ambients, SA. The dynamics of SA relies upon capabilities (and cocapabilities) exercised by mobile agents, called ambients, to interact with each other. These capabilities contain references, the names of ambients with which they wish to interact. In SAP we generalise the notion of capability: in order to interact with an ambient n, an ambient m must exercise a capability indicating both n and a password h to access n; the interaction between n and m takes place only if n is willing to perform a corresponding cocapability with the same password h. The name h can also be looked upon as a port to access ambient n via port h. In SAP by managing passwords/ports, for example generating new ones and distributing them selectively, an ambient may now program who may migrate into its computation space, and when. Moreover in SAP an ambient may provide different services/resources depending on the port accessed by the incoming clients. Then, we give an ltsbased operational semantics for SAP and a labelled bisimulation equivalence which is proved to coincide with reduction barbed congruence. We use our notion of bisimulation to prove a set of algebraic laws which are subsequently exploited to prove more significant examples.

Abstract. We reexamine the standard structural operational semantics of the πcalculus with the view that both process structure and contextual observational power should play roles in describing the behavioural theory. To that end we provide a decomposition of the operational semantics of π which allows for a systematic definition of labelled transitions. These are derived from the calculus ’ underlying reduction rules by following the contextsaslabels philosophy while being presented using the structural approach. Our novel transition system refines to a composite description of the standard early lts. We generalise our technique to higherorder and asynchronous variants.

Resource control has attracted increasing interest in foundational research on distributed systems. This paper focuses on space control and develops an analysis of space usage in the context of an ambient calculus with bounded capacities and weighed processes, where migration and activation require space. A type system controls the dynamics of the calculus by providing static guarantees that the intended capacity bounds are preserved throughout the computation. We investigate various termlevel mechanisms to complement the typed control on the dynamics of space allocation and acquisition, and study their consequences on the semantic theory of the calculus.

Higherorder process calculi, for its abstraction capability and theoretical significance, have constantly been receiving much attention in the field of process calculi, and stand as a mathematical tool for describing and analyzing mobile systems with dynamically changing interconnection structures. In this thesis we contribute to the higherorder paradigm in several aspects. • Higherorder πcalculus with mismatch: the bisimulation theory. Linear fragment of higherorder πcalculus with mismatch: the axiomatization. The problem of the axiomatization of higherorder process calculi, such as higherorder πcalculus, is always a nontrivial one. However, it is important, both in theory and practice, to be able to decide whether two higherorder processes are equivalent with respect to some bisimulation, which needs an algorithm that can effectively analyze and give an answer efficiently. We further the available work by considering the higherorder πcalculus with mismatch, which is a useful operator in bisimulation theory and especially the axiomatization, from algorithmic point of view.
