Online social networking sites like Orkut, YouTube, and Flickr are among the most popular sites on the Internet. Users of these sites form a social network, which provides a powerful means of sharing, organizing, and finding content and contacts. The popularity of these sites provides an opportunity to study the characteristics of online social network graphs at large scale. Understanding these graphs is important, both to improve current systems and to design new applications of online social networks. This paper presents a large-scale measurement study and analysis of the structure of multiple online social networks. We examine data gathered from four popular online social networks: Flickr, YouTube, LiveJournal, and Orkut. We crawled the publicly accessible user links on each site, obtaining a large portion of each social network’s graph. Our data set contains over 11.3 million users and 328 million links. We believe that this is the first study to examine multiple online social networks at scale. Our results confirm the power-law, small-world, and scalefree properties of online social networks. We observe that the indegree of user nodes tends to match the outdegree; that the networks contain a densely connected core of high-degree nodes; and that this core links small groups of strongly clustered, low-degree nodes at the fringes of the network. Finally, we discuss the implications of these structural properties for the design of social network based systems.

The small-world phenomenon formalized in this article as the coincidence of high local clustering and short global separation, is shown to be a general feature of sparse, decentralized networks that are neither completely ordered nor completely random. Networks of this kind have received little attention, yet they appear to be widespread in the social and natural sciences, as is indicated here by three distinct examples. Furthermore, small admixtures of randomness to an otherwise ordered network can have a dramatic impact on its dynamical, as well as structural, properties—a feature illustrated by a simple model of disease transmission.

A failure in a power transmission line causes a number of circuit breakers to activate in an eort to isolate the failure and prevent it from corrupting the rest of the power system. Based on information from these physically distributed protective devices, a central controller needs to quickly identify and locate the failure. The task becomes challenging due to the complexity of modern power transmission networks and due to the possibility of multiple sensor failures or incorrect operation of protective devices. In this paper we investigate a solution to this problem using Petri net models. Our approach is attractive because it allows concurrent/incremental processing of the information that arrives at the controller and because it requires only simple calculations (linear checks) during execution time. Most reasoning is implicitly performed at design time, which gives our method an important edge for real-time monitoring. Furthermore, these same techniques can potentially handle mult...

This paper investigates travelling wave based protection schemes developed for high voltage transmission systems and their adaptation to medium voltage distribution networks in order to enable ultra high speed relaying (within a quarter of a cycle of the power frequency) on a medium voltage level. After different travelling wave algorithms are evaluated using simple test systems, they are applied to an industrial power system where fault detection within one millisecond is required. Difficulties that arise from typical characteristics of medium voltage distribution systems are outlined and requirements to measurement and signal processing systems are discussed.

Abstract — This paper describes a fault location algorithm for three terminal lines using wavelet transform of the fault initiated transients. The results presented in [1] are extended to the case of three terminal configuration and a new single ended procedure is developed for teed circuits. The algorithm gives accurate results for the case of three terminal lines including series compensated branch, mutual coupled line section and different values of fault resistances. The performance of the algorithm is tested on different scenarios by using ATP/EMTP program and MATLAB

Abstract—To determine the presence and location of faults in a transmission by the adaptation of protective distance relay based on the measurement of fixed settings as line impedance is achieved by several different techniques. Moreover, a fast, accurate and robust technique for real-time purposes is required for the modern power systems. The appliance of radial basis function neural network in transmission line protection is demonstrated in this paper. The method applies the power system via voltage and current signals to learn the hidden relationship presented in the input patterns. It is experiential that the proposed technique is competent to identify the particular fault direction more speedily. System simulations studied show that the proposed approach is able to distinguish the direction of a fault on a transmission line swiftly and correctly, therefore suitable for the real-time purposes. Keywords—radial basis function neural network; transmission lines protection; relaying; power system. I.

Transmission and distribution lines are vital links between generating units and consumers. They are exposed to atmosphere, hence chances of occurrence of fault in transmission line is very high, which has to be immediately taken care of in order to minimize damage caused by it. In this paper discrete wavelet transform of voltage signals at the two ends of the transmission lines have been analyzed. Transient energies of detail information for two consecutive data windows at fault are used for analysis. Four layer feed forward back propagation neural networks are designed to classify and locate the fault at different single line to ground fault conditions. General Terms Fault classification and detection, wavelet multi resolution analysis, neural network.
