For years, the software industry has been suffering from problems subsumed under the term "software crisis". While traditional development methods were not able to provide a cure, open source software (OSS) seems to be an effective approach to reduce product cycle-times and decrease development costs. Moreover, OSS has great potential to achieve high software quality and promote creation of reusable software, provided that proper organization and infrastructure are in place. In this paper, we look at different facets of software quality, and analyze possibilities and limitations of OSS methodology regarding the achievement of certain quality levels. We further consider different forms of cooperation between enterprises and OSS communities and examine the prerequisites for successful adoption of OSS methodology. We come to the conclusion that to benefit from the advantages of OSS, enterprises have to adapt their internal organization and establish a development style that is less formally organized and more strongly based on self-organization principles.

Test suite minimisation techniques seek to reduce the effort required for regression testing by selecting a subset of test suites. In previous work, the problem has been considered as a single-objective optimisation problem. However, real world regression testing can be a complex process in which multiple testing criteria and constraints are involved. This paper presents the concept of Pareto efficiency for the test suite minimisation problem. The Pareto efficient approach is inherently capable of dealing with multiple objectives, providing the decision maker with a group of solutions that are not dominated by each other. The paper illustrates the benefits of Pareto efficient multi-objective test suite minimisation with empirical studies of two and three objective formulations, in which multiple objectives such as coverage and past fault-detection history are considered. The paper utilises a hybrid, multi-objective genetic algorithm that combines the efficient approximation of the greedy approach with the capability of population based genetic algorithm to produce higher-quality Pareto fronts. We seek to identify work practices that make technology-supported, self-organizing, distributed (or virtual) teams (TSSODT for short) effective in producing outputs satisfactory to their sponsors, meeting the needs of their members, and continuing to function. A particularly important practice for team effectiveness is decision making: are the right decisions made at the right time to get the work done in a way that satisfies team sponsors, keeps contributors happy and engaged, and enables continued team success? In this research-in-progress paper, we report on an inductive qualitative analysis of 120 decision episodes taken by two Free/Libre Open Source Software development teams. Our analysis revealed differences in decision-making practices that seem to be related to differences in overall team effectiveness.
