Change is coming to engineering education, but many reform efforts have proceeded without explicitly examining the current prime movers of change, the forces that resist change, or the facets or foci of the system that are most in need of change. This essay frames the current debate by examining these things. Specifically, change is seen as being motivated by external competitive and technological forces. Resistance to change is viewed as being reinforced by the fundamental myth of engineering education that asserts the supremacy of basic research over all other engineering academic activities. After providing evidence that the myth resulted largely from an overestimation of the role of science and an underestimation of the role of engineering in World War II, the essay considers needed organizational, integrative, and programatic changes. Key among these are the proposal to create student-faculty teams responsible for delivering a quality education, a proposal for bottom-up alliances ...

Every study of engineering education and the skills required of practicing engineers lists life-long learning (LLL) as a necessary ingredient. And yet, there has been little developed in the way of formal preparation for engineering students so that they will become life-long learners. In fact, the loaded curriculum presented in most engineering programs works against developing the learning skills and love of learning required to be a successful LLL.

simulation, model validation, organization theory, network organization, organizational Network organizations offer learning, adaptive and resilient capabilities that are particularly useful in high velocity environments as these capabilities allow the organization to effectively respond to change. The dynamic, evolutionary nature of network organizations affords such advantageous capabilities. Although the advantages of network organizations are well-studied, the risks associated with them are not. Of interest is the study of critical personnel. Understanding criticality within an organization can help improve performance and protect against the risk of loss. But the study of critical personnel has traditionally used static structural representations that do not represent the dynamic nature of network organizations. This thesis advances the study of critical personnel risks in network organizations

TSER Contract SOE1-CT97-1072Executive Summary This report deals with the role of educational background in diffusion of management knowledge. The role of educational background as a carrier of management knowledge has been one of the main issues in the Creation of European Management Practice project (the CEMP project). This report addresses two issues on this matter: educational background as a provider of management knowledge and educational background as a legitimating factor in managerial qualification systems. The first issue is based on a study of the relationship between 551 Norwegian managers ’ educational background and their management competence. The results from the study of business education and engineering education as providers of management knowledge reveal that there are no strong relationship between type of educational background and managerial meta-competence. This suggests that the diffusion of management knowledge from so-called management education is quite meager at least regarding direct influence on managers ’ competence reservoir. The second issue conceptualizes previous research in the field. Based on these

This paper reports an empirical study that explores how leadership behaviors emerge and are distributed in online student teams, and the relationship of emergent leadership patterns to various outcomes. Two patterns of emergent leadership were identified: strong and weak leadership. Results suggest that weak leadership is at least equally effective and may be more effective than strong leadership in producing positive team outcomes. Weak leadership may also produce interaction patterns more conducive to the educational objectives of a "community of inquiry " model.

Student motivation within the classrooms is a widely recognized problem and will remain so in the foreseeable future. Literature suggests that students ’ motivation for learning and performance can be enhanced by creating an appropriate classroom environment, which is again determined by the design of various structural characteristics of a course, such as type of tasks, autonomy of students, and evaluation. On the basis of the framework of Hackman and Oldham’s Job Characteristics Model (JCM) and support from educational research, this conceptual article identifies the structural characteristics instrumental to an effective course design and presents related instructional strategies for maximizing student motivation in business school classrooms. Various issues related to the proposed application of the JCM framework in classrooms, including its relevance to the larger landscape of business education, are also discussed.
