A class of interval-based temporal languages for uniformly representing and reasoning about actions and plans is presented. Actions are represented by describing what is true while the action itself is occurring, and plans are constructed by temporally relating actions and world states. The temporal languages are members of the family of Description Logics, which are characterized by high expressivity combined with good computational properties. The subsumption problem for a class of temporal Description Logics is investigated and sound and complete decision procedures are given. The basic language TL-F is considered #rst: it is the composition of a temporal logic TL # able to express interval temporal networks # together with the non-temporal logic F # a Feature Description Logic. The paper considers the standard concept description language ALC augmented with various kinds of modal operators which can be applied to concepts and axioms. The main aim is to develop methods of proving decidability of the satisfiability problem for this language and apply them to description logics with most important temporal and epistemic operators, thereby obtaining satisfiability checking algorithms for these logics. We deal with the possible world semantics under the constant domain assumption and show that the expanding and varying domain assumptions are reducible to it. Models with both finite and arbitrary constant domains are investigated. We begin by considering description logics with only one modal operator and then prove a general transfer theorem which makes it possible to lift the obtained results to many systems of polymodal description logic.

In this paper, we construct a new concept description language intended for representing dynamic and intensional knowledge. The most important feature distinguishing this language from its predecessors in the literature is that it allows applications of modal operators to all kinds of syntactic terms: concepts, roles and formulas. Moreover, the language may contain both local (i.e., state-dependent) and global (i.e., state-independent) concepts, roles and objects. All this provides us with the most complete and natural means for re ecting the dynamic and intensional behaviour of application domains. We construct a satis ability checking (mosaic-type) algorithm for this language (based on ALC) in(i) arbitrary multimodal frames, (ii) frames with universal accessibility relations (for knowledge) and (iii) frames with transitive, symmetrical and euclidean relations (for beliefs). On the other hand, it is shown that the satisfaction problem becomes undecidable if the underlying frames are arbitrary strict linear orders, hN; <i, or the language contains the common knowledge operator for n 2 agents. 1

Recent efforts in the Conceptual Modelling community have been devoted to properly capturing time-varying information. Various temporally enhanced Entity-Relationship (ER) models have been proposed that are intended to model the temporal aspects of database conceptual schemas. This work gives a logical formalisation of the various properties that characterise and extend different temporal ER models which are found in literature. The formalisation we propose is based on Description Logics (DL), which have been proved useful for a logical reconstruction of the most popular conceptual data modelling formalisms.

Terminological knowledge representation formalisms can be used to represent objective, time-independent facts about an application domain. Notions like belief, intentions, and time which are essential for the representation of multi-agent environments can only be expressed in a very limited way. For such notions, modal logics with possible worlds semantics provides a formally well-founded and wellinvestigated basis. This paper presents a framework for integrating modal operators into terminological knowledge representation languages. These operators can be used both inside of concept expressions and in front of terminological and assertional axioms. We introduce syntax and semantics of the extended language, and show that satisfiability of finite sets of formulas is decidable, provided that all modal operators are interpreted in the basic logic K, and that the increasing domain assumption is used. 1

Using a mosaic technique, we prove a general satisfiability criterion for formulas in ML1, which reduces the modal satisfiability to the classical one. The criterion is then used to single out a number of new, in a sense optimal, decidable fragments of various modal predicate logics.

This paper introduces a new logical formalism, intended for temporal conceptual modelling, as a natural combination of the well-known description logic DLR and point-based linear temporal logic with Since and Until. The expressive power of the resulting DLRUS logic is illustrated by providing a characterisation of the most important temporal conceptual modelling constructs appeared in the literature. We define a query language (where queries are non-recursive Datalog programs and atoms are complex DLRUS expressions) and investigate the problem of checking query containment under the constraints defined by DLRUS conceptual schemas---i.e., DLRUS knowledge bases---as well as the problems of schema satisfiability and logical implication.
