Abstract. The intersection of large ordered sets is a common problem in the context of the evaluation of boolean queries to a search engine. In this paper we propose several improved algorithms for computing the intersection of sorted arrays, and in particular for searching sorted arrays in the intersection context. We perform an experimental comparison with the algorithms from the previous studies from Demaine, López-Ortiz and Munro [ALENEX 2001], and from Baeza-Yates and Salinger [SPIRE 2005]; in addition, we implement and test the intersection algorithm from Barbay and Kenyon [SODA 2002] and its randomized variant [SAGA 2003]. We consider both the random data set from Baeza-Yates and Salinger, the Google queries used by Demaine et al., a corpus provided by Google and a larger corpus from the TREC Terabyte 2006 efficiency query stream, along with its own query log. We measure the performance both in terms of the number of comparisons and searches performed, and in terms of the CPU time on two different architectures. Our results confirm or improve the results from both previous studies in their respective context (comparison model on real data and CPU measures on random data), and extend them to new contexts. In particular we show that value-based search algorithms perform well in posting lists in terms of the number of comparisons performed. 1

In a multiple-choice hashing scheme, each item is stored in one of P possible hash table buckets. The availability of these multiple choices allows for a substantial reduction in the maximum load of the buckets. However, a lookup may now require examining each of the locations. For applications where this cost is undesirable, Song et al. propose keeping a summary that allows one to determine which of the locations is appropriate for each item, where the summary may allow false positives for items not in hash table. We propose alternative, simple constructions of such summaries that use less space for both the summary and the underlying hash table. Moreover, our constructions are easily analyzable and tunable.

This thesis is about the design and analysis of Bloom filter and multiple choice hash table variants for application settings with extreme resource requirements. We employ a very flexible methodology, combining theoretical, numerical, and empirical techniques to obtain constructions that are both analyzable and practical. First, we show that a wide class of Bloom filter variants can be effectively implemented using very easily computable combinations of only two fully random hash functions. From a theoretical perspective, these results show that Bloom filters and related data structures can often be substantially derandomized with essentially no loss in performance. From a practical perspective, this derandomization allows for a significant speedup in certain query intensive applications. The rest of this work focuses on designing space-efficient, open-addressed, multiple choice hash tables for implementation in high-performance router hardware. Using multiple hash functions conserves space, but requires every hash table operation to consider multiple hash buckets, forcing a tradeoff between the slow speed of examining these buckets serially
