Abstract. We consider workflow graphs as a model for the control flow of a business process model and study the problem of workflow graph parsing, i.e., finding the structure of a workflow graph. More precisely, we want to find a decomposition of a workflow graph into a hierarchy of sub-workflows that are subgraphs with a single entry and a single exit of control. Such a decomposition is the crucial step, for example, to translate a process modeled in a graph-based language such as BPMN into a process modeled in a block-based language such as BPEL. For this and other applications, it is desirable that the decomposition be unique, modular and as fine as possible, where modular means that a local change of the workflow graph can only cause a local change of the decomposition. In this paper, we provide a decomposition that is unique, modular and finer than in previous work. It is based on and extends similar work for sequential programs by Tarjan and Valdes [11]. We show that our decomposition can be computed in linear time based on an algorithm by Hopcroft and Tarjan [3] that finds the triconnected components of a biconnected graph.

Computing a crossing minimum drawing of a given planar graph G augmented by an additional edge e in which all crossings involve e, has been a long standing open problem in graph drawing. Alternatively, the problem can be stated as finding a planar combinatorial embedding of a planar graph G in which the given edge e can be inserted with the minimum number of crossings. Many problems concerned with the optimization over the set of all combinatorial embeddings of a planar graph turned out to be NP-hard. Surprisingly, we found a conceptually simple linear time algorithm based on SPQR-trees, which is able to find a crossing minimum solution.

Identification of behavioural contradictions is an important aspect of software engineering, in particular for checking the consistency between a business process model used as system specification and a corresponding workflow model used as implementation. In this paper, we propose causal behavioural profiles as the basis for a consistency notion, which capture essential behavioural information, such as order, exclusiveness, and causality between pairs of activities. Existing notions of behavioural equivalence, such as bisimulation and trace equivalence, might also be applied as consistency notions. Still, they are exponential in computation. Our novel concept of causal behavioural profiles provides a weaker behavioural consistency notion that can be computed efficiently using structural decomposition techniques for sound free-choice workflow systems if unstructured net fragments are acyclic or can be traced back to S- or T-nets.

The Balanced Subgraph problem (edge deletion variant) asks for a 2-coloring of a graph that minimizes the inconsistencies with given edge labels. It has applications in social networks, systems biology, and integrated circuit design. We present an exact algorithm for Balanced Subgraph based on a combination of data reduction rules and a fixed-parameter algorithm. The data reduction is based on finding small separators and a novel gadget construction scheme. The fixed-parameter algorithm is based on iterative compression with a very effective heuristic speedup. Our implementation can solve biological realworld instances exactly for which previously only approximations [DasGupta et al., WEA 2006] were known.

Abstract. The Tutte polynomial of a graph, also known as the partition function of the q-state Potts model, is a 2-variable polynomial graph invariant of considerable importance in both combinatorics and statistical physics. It contains several other polynomial invariants, such as the chromatic polynomial and flow polynomial as partial evaluations, and various numerical invariants such as the number of spanning trees as complete evaluations. However despite its ubiquity, there are no widely-available effective computational tools able to compute the Tutte polynomial of a general graph of reasonable size. In this paper we describe the implementation of a program that exploits isomorphisms in the computation tree to extend the range of graphs for which it is feasible to compute their Tutte polynomials. We also consider edge-selection heuristics which give good performance in practice. We empirically demonstrate the utility of our program on random graphs. More evidence of its usefulness arises from our success in finding counterexamples to a conjecture of Welsh on the location of the real flow roots of a graph. 1

The planarization method has proven to be successful in graph drawing. The output, a combinatorial planar embedding of the so-called planarized graph, can be combined with state-of-the-art planar drawing algorithms. However, many practical applications have additional constraints on the drawings that result in restrictions on the set of admissible planar embeddings. In this paper, we consider embedding constraints that restrict the admissible order of incident edges around a vertex. Such constraints occur in applications, e.g., from side or port constraints. We introduce a set of hierarchical embedding constraints that include grouping, oriented, and mirror constraints, and show how these constraints can be integrated into the planarization method. For this, we first present a linear time algorithm for testing if a given graph G is ec-planar, i.e., admits a planar embedding satisfying the given embedding constraints. In the case that G is ec-planar, we provide a linear time algorithm for computing the corresponding ec-embedding. Otherwise, an ec-planar subgraph is computed. The critical part is to re-insert the deleted edges subject to the embedding constraints so that the number of crossings is kept small. For this, we present a linear time algorithm which is able to insert an edge into an ec-planar graph H so that the insertion is crossing minimal among all ec-planar embeddings of H. As a side result, we characterize the set of all possible ec-planar embeddings using BC- and SPQR-trees.

We study the following problem: Given a planar graph G and a planar drawing (embedding) of a subgraph of G, can such a drawing be extended to a planar drawing of the entire graph G? This problem fits the paradigm of extending a partial solution to a complete one, which has been studied before in many different settings. Unlike many cases, in which the presence of a partial solution in the input makes hard an otherwise easy problem, we show that the planarity question remains polynomial-time solvable. Our algorithm is based on several combinatorial lemmata which show that the planarity of partially embedded graphs meets the “oncas” behaviour – obvious necessary conditions for planarity are also sufficient. These conditions are expressed in terms of the interplay between (a) rotation schemes and containment relationships between cycles and (b) the decomposition of a graph into its connected, biconnected, and triconnected components. This implies that no dynamic programming is needed for a decision algorithm and that the elements of the decomposition can be processed independently. Further, by equipping the components of the decomposition with suitable data structures and by carefully splitting the problem into simpler subproblems, we improve our algorithm to reach linear-time complexity. Finally, we consider several generalizations of the problem, e.g. minimizing the number of edges of the partial embedding that need to be rerouted to extend it, and argue that they are NP-hard. Also, we show how our algorithm can be applied to solve related Graph Drawing problems.

The core reduction is based on the decomposition of a graph into its triconnected components and can be computed in linear time. It has applications in heuristic and exact optimization algorithms for the planarity measures mentioned above. We consider the problem of computing a crossing minimum drawing of a given planar graph G = (V, E) augmented by a star, i.e., an additional vertex v together with its incident edges Ev = {(v, u) | u ∈ V}, in which all crossings involve Ev. Alternatively, the problem can be stated as finding a planar embedding of G, in which the given star can be inserted requiring the minimum number of crossings. This is a generalization of the crossing minimum edge insertion problem [15], and can help to find improved approximations for the crossing minimization problem. Indeed, in practice, the algorithm for the crossing minimum edge insertion problem turned out to be the key for obtaining the currently strongest approximate solutions for the crossing number of general graphs. The generalization considered here can lead to even better solutions for the crossing minimization problem. Furthermore, it offers new insight into the crossing number problem for almost-planar and apex graphs. It has been an open problem whether the star insertion problem is polynomially solvable. We give an affirmative answer by describing the first efficient algorithm for this problem. This algorithm uses the SPQR-tree data structure to handle the exponential number of possible embeddings, in conjunction with dynamic programming schemes for which we introduce partitioning cost subproblems. 1
