This paper aims to present a review of recent as well as classic image registration methods. Image registration is the process of overlaying images (two or more) of the same scene taken at different times, from different viewpoints, and/or by different sensors. The registration geometrically align two images (the reference and sensed images). The reviewed approaches are classified according to their nature (areabased and feature-based) and according to four basic steps of image registration procedure: feature detection, feature matching, mapping function design, and image transformation and resampling. Main contributions, advantages, and drawbacks of the methods are mentioned in the paper. Problematic issues of image registration and outlook for the future research are discussed too. The major goal of the paper is to provide a comprehensive reference source for the researchers involved in image registration, regardless of particular application areas. q 2003 Elsevier B.V. A graduated assignment algorithm for graph matching is presented which is fast and accurate even in the presence of high noise. By combining graduated non-convexity, twoway (assignment) constraints, and sparsity, large improvements in accuracy and speed are achieved. Its low order computational complexity [O(lm), where l and m are the number of links in the two graphs] and robustness in the presence of noise offer advantages over traditional combinatorial approaches. The algorithm, not restricted to any special class of graph, is applied to subgraph isomorphism, weighted graph matching, and attributed relational graph matching. Abstract—Fingerprint verification is one of the most reliable personal identification methods. However, manual fingerprint verification is so tedious, time-consuming, and expensive that it is incapable of meeting today’s increasing performance requirements. An automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS) is widely needed. It plays a very important role in forensic and civilian applications such as criminal identification, access control, and ATM card verification. This paper describes the design and implementation of an on-line fingerprint verification system which operates in two stages: minutia extraction and minutia matching. An improved version of the minutia extraction algorithm proposed by Ratha et al., which is much faster and more reliable, is implemented for extracting features from an input fingerprint image captured with an on-line inkless scanner. For minutia matching, an alignment-based elastic matching algorithm has been developed. This algorithm is capable of finding the correspondences between minutiae in the input image and the stored template without resorting to exhaustive search and has the ability of adaptively compensating for the nonlinear deformations and inexact pose transformations between fingerprints. The system has been tested on two sets of fingerprint images captured with inkless scanners. The verification accuracy is found to be acceptable. Typically, a complete fingerprint verification procedure takes, on an average, about eight seconds on a SPARC 20 workstation. These experimental results show that our system meets the response time requirements of on-line verification with high accuracy.

With identity fraud in our society reaching unprecedented proportions and with an increasing emphasis on the emerging automatic personal identification applications, biometrics-based verification, especially fingerprint-based identification, is receiving a lot of attention. There are two major shortcomings of the traditional approaches to fingerprint representation. For a considerable fraction of population, the representations based on explicit detection of complete ridge structures in the fingerprint are difficult to extract automatically. The widely used minutiae-based representation does not utilize a significant component of the rich discriminatory information available in the fingerprints. Local ridge structures cannot be completely characterized by minutiae. Further, minutiae-based matching has difficulty in quickly matching two fingerprint images containing different number of unregistered minutiae points. The proposed filter-based algorithm uses a bank of Gabor filters to capture both local and global details in a fingerprint as a compact fixed length FingerCode. The fingerprint matching is based on the Euclidean distance between the two corresponding FingerCodes and hence is extremely fast. We are able to achieve a verification accuracy which is only marginally inferior to the best results of minutiae-based algorithms published in the open literature [1]. Our system performs better than a state-of-the-art minutiae-based system when the performance requirement of the application system does not demand a very low false acceptance rate. Finally, we show that the matching performance can be improved by combining the decisions of the matchers based on complementary (minutiae-based and filter-based) fingerprint information.

Because of their unique and peculiar needs, image databases cannot be treated in a similar fashion to other types of digital libraries. The contextual dependencies present in images and the complex nature of two-dimensional image data make the representation issues more difficult for image databases. An invariant representation of an image is still an open research issue. For these reasons, it is difficult to find a universal content-based retrieval technique. Current approaches based on shape, texture, and color for indexing image databases have met with limited success. Fingerprint verification is an important biometric technique for personal identification. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a prototype automatic identity authentication system which uses fingerprints to authenticate the identity of an individual. We have developed an improved minutiae extraction algorithm which is faster and more accurate than our earlier algorithm [58]. An alignment-based minutiae matching algorithm has been proposed. This algorithm is capable of finding the correspondences between input minutiae and the stored template without resorting to exhaustive search and has the ability to adaptively compensate for the nonlinear deformations and inexact transformations between an input and a template. To establish an objective assessment of our system, both the MSU and the NIST 9 fingerprint databases have been used to estimate the performance numbers. The experimental results reveal that our system can achieve a good performance on these databases. ...

A fundamental open problem in computer vision---determining pose and correspondence between two sets of points in space---is solved with a novel, fast [O(nm)], robust and easily implementable algorithm. The technique works on noisy 2D or 3D point sets that may be of unequal sizes and may differ by non-rigid transformations. Using a combination of optimization techniques such as deterministic annealing and the softassign, which have recently emerged out of the recurrent neural network/statistical physics framework, analog objective functions describing the problems are minimized. Over thirty thousand experiments, on randomly generated points sets with varying amounts of noise and missing and spurious points, and on hand-written character sets demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm. We present a novel method for the geometric alignment of autoradiographs of the brain. The method is based on finding the spatial mapping and the one-to-one correspondences (or homologies) between point features extracted from the images and rejecting non-homologies as outliers. In this way, we attempt to account for the local natural and artifactual differences between the autoradiograph slices. We have executed the resulting automated algorithm on a set of left prefrontal cortex autoradiograph slices, specifically demonstrated its ability to perform point outlier rejection, validated it using synthetically generated spatial mappings and provided a visual comparison against the well known iterated closest point (ICP) algorithm. Visualization of a stack of aligned left prefrontal cortex autoradiograph slices is also provided.

Abstract--Based on 2-D cluster approach, a fast algorithm for point pattern matching is proposed to effectively solve the problems of optimal matches between two point pattern under geometrical transformation and correctly identify the missing or spurious points of patterns. Theorems and algorithms are developed to determine the matching pairs support of each point pair and its transformation parameters (scaling s and rotation 0) on a two-parameter space (s,O). Experiments are conducted both on real and synthetic data. The experimental results show that the proposed matching algorithm can handle translation, rotation, and scaling differences under noisy or distorted condition. A procedure for automated 2D shape model design is presented. The modeling system is given a set of training example shapes dened by the coordinates of their contour points. The shapes are automatically aligned using Procrustes analysis, and clustered to obtain cluster prototypes (typical objects) and statistical information about intra-cluster shape variation. One dierence from previously reported methods is that the training set is rst automatically clustered and those shapes considered to be outliers are discarded. In this way, the cluster prototypes are not distorted by outlier shapes. A second dierence is in the manner in which registered sets of points are extracted from each shape contour. We propose a exible point matching technique that takes into account both pose/scale dierences as well as non-linear shape dierences between a pair of objects.
