tionships. Building on studies that emphasize the role of intangible assets in interorganizational relationships, this study argues that buyers are less likely to use reverse auctions for supplier relationships involving a high degree of non-contractibility. The argument complements traditional transaction cost economics arguments that focus on the impact of asset specificity and product specialization. We identify six dimensions of non-contractibility—quality, supplier technological investments, information exchange, responsiveness, trust, and flexibility—which encompass taskbased and interaction-based non-contractibility. The study finds that, together with product specialization, these noncontractible elements of interorganizational relationships have greater explanatory power for reverse auction use than asset specificity. This result highlights the importance of supplier investments in non-contractible elements of exchange relationships in an increasingly dynamic service- and knowledge-based economy.

Multi-national corporations (MNCs) are increasingly using offshore business process outsourcing (BPO) to manage their primary and support functions and achieve their strategic objectives. Though India is regarded as the "undisputed leader in offshore services, " the Indian BPO industry is plagued by high employee turnover and labor shortages. Indian BPO firms will need effective employee selection and retention strategies to sustain their growth. While compensation is an important mechanism to attract and retain employees, and competencies such as "practical intelligence " are important to the performance of technical professionals, research has not yet examined how offshore BPO firms price these competencies and determine compensation for their professionals. This paper addresses the research gap by developing theory on the role of social and psychological capital in employee compensation, and tests the theory using data from 3,900 Indian BPO professionals over the 2006–2008 time period.

This paper seeks to understand how high-skill foreign IT professionals assimilate in the United States by examining the wage trajectories of foreign and American information technology (IT) professionals. While prior research shows that on average foreign IT professionals earn more compared to US citizen IT professionals, our focus here is on temporal evolution of differences in wages to understand how the wages of foreign and American IT professionals evolve over time. We use data on skills and compensation of more than 50,000 IT professionals in the U.S. over the period 2000-2005 to test our hypotheses. The results indicate that IT professionals on H-1B or other work visa earn a significant salary premium over the entire duration of work experience when compared with IT professionals with U.S. citizenship. Interestingly, the difference in wages appears to grow over time suggesting that foreign IT professionals with substantial work experience on work visa earn significantly more premium than those with less work experience. The IT professionals on H-1B or other work visa exhibit steeper wage trajectories than either greencard holders or American workers; the wage trajectories of greencard holders and American workers have similar slopes. The wages of IT professionals on H-1B or other work visa with somewhere between 15-20 years of work experience is higher than that of greencard holders. We discuss implications for researchers, policy-makers, managers and individual workers.

Causal reasoning is central to scientific practice and to everyday life, yet has received scant attention in Information Systems epistemology. This essay identifies six types of causal analysis that can be used in IS research: regularity, counterfactual, probabilistic, manipulation, substantival (mental), and enabling condition analysis. A framework is developed for application of the different types of analysis in terms of two dimensions; planned versus emergent systems and prescriptive versus descriptive modes of research. It is shown how the different types of analysis can be used in each cell of the framework. The identification of the substantival and enabling condition types of analysis for Information Systems research is novel. Further work is indicated, particularly with respect to probabilistically necessary and sufficient conditions, qualitative evaluation of causal chains, and the plausibility of claims for causality with some statistical methods in common use.

Do information technology investments improve firm profitability? If so, is this effect because such investments help improve sales, or is it because they help reduce overall operating expenses? How does the effect of IT on profitability compare with that of advertising and of research and development? These are important questions because investments in IT constitute a large part of firms ’ discretionary expenditures, and managers need to understand the likely impacts and mechanisms to justify and realize value from their IT and related resource allocation processes. The empirical evidence in this paper, derived using archival data from 1998 to 2003 for more than 400 global firms, suggests that IT has a positive impact on profitability. Importantly, the effect of IT investments on sales and profitability is higher than that of other discretionary investments, such as advertising and R&D. A significant portion of the impact of IT on firm profitability is accounted for by ITenabled revenue growth, but there is no evidence for the effect of IT on profitability through operating cost reduction. Taken together, these findings suggest that firms have had greater success in achieving higher profitability through IT-enabled revenue growth than through IT-enabled cost reduction. They also provide important implications for managers to make allocations among discretionary expenditures such as IT, advertising, and R&D. With regard to IT expenditures, the results imply that firms should accord higher priority to IT projects that have revenue growth potential over those that focus mainly on cost savings.

Does information technology outsourcing reduce non-IT operating costs? This study examines this question and also asks whether internal IT investments moderate the relationship between IT outsourcing and non-IT operating costs. Using a panel data set of approximately 300 U.S. firms from 1999 to 2003, we find that IT outsourcing has a significant negative association with firms ’ non-IT operating costs. However, this finding does not imply that firms should completely outsource their entire IT function. Our results suggest that firms benefit more in terms of reduction in non-IT operating costs when they also have higher levels of complementary investments in internal IT, especially IT labor. Investments in internal IT systems can make business processes more amenable to outsourcing, and complementary investments in internal IT staff can facilitate monitoring of vendor performance and coordination with vendors. We discuss the implications of these findings for further research and for practice.
