Data integration is the problem of combining data residing at different sources, and providing the user with a unified view of these data. The problem of designing data integration systems is important in current real world applications, and is characterized by a number of issues that are interesting from a theoretical point of view. This document presents on overview of the material to be presented in a tutorial on data integration. The tutorial is focused on some of the theoretical issues that are relevant for data integration. Special attention will be devoted to the following aspects: modeling a data integration application, processing queries in data integration, dealing with inconsistent data sources, and reasoning on queries.

We think of Match as an operator which takes two graph-like structures and produces a mapping between semantically related nodes. We concentrate on classifications with tree structures. In semantic matching, correspondences are discovered by translating the natural language labels of nodes into propositional formulas, and by codifying matching into a propositional unsatisfiability problem. We distinguish between problems with conjunctive formulas and problems with disjunctive formulas, and present various optimizations. For instance, we propose a linear time algorithm which solves the first class of problems. According to the tests we have done so far, the optimizations substantially improve the time performance of the system.

Schema matching is the task of finding semantic correspondences between elements of two schemas. It is needed in many database applications, such as integration of web data sources, data warehouse loading and XML message mapping. To reduce the amount of user effort as much as possible, automatic approaches combining several match techniques are required. While such match approaches have found considerable interest recently, the problem of how to best combine different match algorithms still requires further work. We have thus developed the COMA schema matching system as a platform to combine multiple matchers in a flexible way. We provide a large spectrum of individual matchers, in particular a novel approach aiming at reusing results from previous match operations, and several mechanisms to combine the results of matcher executions. We use COMA as a framework to com- prehensively evaluate the effectiveness of different matchers and their combinations for real-world sche- mas. The results obtained so far show the superiority of combined match approaches and indicate the high value of reuse-oriented strategies.

Schema/ontology matching is a critical problem in many application domains, such as, semantic web, schema/ontology integration, data warehouses, e-commerce, catalog matching, etc. Many diverse solutions to the matching problem have been proposed so far. In this paper we present a taxonomy of schema-based matching techniques that builds on the previous work on classifying schema matching approaches. Some innovations are in introducing new criteria which distinguish between matching techniques relying on diverse semantic clues. In particular, we distinguish between heuristic and formal techniques at schemalevel; and implicit and explicit techniques at element- and structure-level. Based on the classification proposed we overview some of the recent schema/ontology matching systems pointing which part of the solution space they cover.

Semantic integration is an active area of research in several disciplines, such as databases, information-integration, and ontologies. This paper provides a brief survey of the approaches to semantic integration developed by researchers in the ontology community. We focus on the approaches that differentiate the ontology research from other related areas. The main abstractions are models (e.g., schemas, interface definitions) and mappings between models. It treats these abstractions as bulk objects and offers such operators as Match, Merge, Diff, Compose, Apply, and ModelGen. This paper extends earlier treatments of these operators and applies them to three classical meta data management problems: schema integration, schema evolution, and round-trip engineering.

Abstract. Ontologies now play an important role for many knowledge-intensive applications for which they provide a source of precisely defined terms. However, with their wide-spread usage there come problems concerning their proliferation. Ontology engineers or users frequently have a core ontology that they use, e.g., for browsing or querying data, but they need to extend it with, adapt it to, or compare it with the large set of other ontologies. For the task of detecting and retrieving relevant ontologies, one needs means for measuring the similarity between ontologies. As ontology development becomes a more ubiquitous and collaborative process, ontology versioning and evolution becomes an important area of ontology research. The many similarities between database-schema evolution and ontology evolution will allow us to build on the extensive research in schema evolution. However, there are also important differences between database schemas and ontologies. The differences stem from different usage paradigms, the presence of explicit semantics, and different knowledge models. A lot of problems that existed only in theory in database research come to the forefront as practical problems in ontology evolution. These differences have important implications for the development of ontology-evolution frameworks: The traditional distinction between versioning and evolution is not applicable to ontologies. There are several dimensions along which compatibility between versions must be considered. The set of change operations for ontologies is different. We must develop automatic techniques for finding similarities and differences between versions.
