This paper presents an overview of recent progress in the area of multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) space–time coded wireless systems. After some background on the research leading to the discovery of the enormous potential of MIMO wireless links, we highlight the different classes of techniques and algorithms proposed which attempt to realize the various benefits of MIMO including spatial multiplexing and space–time coding schemes. These algorithms are often derived and analyzed under ideal independent fading conditions. We present the state of the art in channel modeling and measurements, leading to a better understanding of actual MIMO gains. Finally, the paper addresses current questions regarding the integration of MIMO links in practical wireless systems and standards.

Abstract—The analysis of the multiple-antenna capacity in the high- regime has hitherto focused on the high- slope (or maximum multiplexing gain), which quantifies the multiplicative increase as a function of the number of antennas. This traditional characterization is unable to assess the impact of prominent channel features since, for a majority of channels, the slope equals the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas. Furthermore, a characterization based solely on the slope captures only the scaling but it has no notion of the power required for a certain capacity. This paper advocates a more refined characterization whereby, as a function of f, the high- capacity is expanded as an affine function where the impact of channel features such as antenna correlation, unfaded components, etc., resides in the zero-order term or power offset. The power offset, for which we find insightful closed-form expressions, is shown to play a chief role for levels of practical interest. Index Terms—Antenna correlation, channel capacity, coherent communication, fading channels, high- analysis, multiantenna arrays, Ricean channels.

For the analysis and design of multielement antenna systems in mobile fading channels, we need a model for the space-time cross correlation among the links of the multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) channel. In this paper we propose a general space-time cross correlation function for narrowband Rayleigh fading MIMO channels, where various parameters of interest such as angle spreads at the base station and the user, the distance between the base station and the user, mean directions of the signal arrivals, array configurations, and Doppler spread are all taken into account. The new space-time cross correlation function includes all the relevant parameters of the MIMO narrowband Rayleigh fading channel in a clean compact form, suitable for both simulation and mathematical analysis. It also covers many known correlation models as special cases. We demonstrate the utility of the new space-time correlation model by clarifying the limitations of a widely-accepted correlation model for MIMO fading channels.

In this paper , we devise theoretical grounds for constructing channel models for Multi-input Multioutput (MIMO) systems based on information theoretic tools. The paper provides a general method to derive a channel model which is consistent with one's state of knowledge. The framework we give here has already been fruitfully explored with success in the context of Bayesian spectrum analysis and parameter estimation. For each channel model, we conduct an asymptotic analysis (in the number of antennas) of the achievable transmission rate using tools from random matrix theory. A central limit theorem is provided on the asymptotic behavior of the mutual information and validated in the finite case by simulations. The results are both useful in terms of designing a system based on criteria such as quality of service and in optimizing transmissions in multiuser networks .

Abstract — We characterize the capacity-achieving input covariance for multi-antenna channels known instantaneously at the receiver and in distribution at the transmitter. Our characterization, valid for arbitrary numbers of antennas, encompasses both the eigenvectors and the eigenvalues. The eigenvectors are found for zero-mean channels with arbitrary fading profiles and a wide range of correlation and keyhole structures. For the eigenvalues, in turn, we present necessary and sufficient conditions as well as an iterative algorithm that exhibits remarkable properties: universal applicability, robustness and rapid convergence. In addition, we identify channel structures for which an isotropic input achieves capacity. Index Terms — Capacity, MIMO, input optimization, fading, antenna correlation, Ricean fading, keyhole channel.

We present a new upper bound on capacity for multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) wireless fading channels which is more general and realistic than previous capacity expressions. By including spatial information at the antenna arrays we derive a closed form upper bound on capacity which uses the physics of signal propagation combined with statistics of the scattering environment. This expression gives the capacity of a MIMO system in terms of antenna placement and scattering environment and leads to valuable insights into the factors determining capacity for a wide range of scattering models.

The use of multi-antenna arrays in both transmission and reception has been shown to dramatically increase the throughput of wireless communication systems. As a result there has been considerable interest in characterizing the ergodic average of the mutual information for realistic correlated channels. Here, an approach is presented that provides analytic expressions not only for the average, but also the higher cumulant moments of the distribution of the mutual information for zero-mean Gaussian MIMO channels with the most general multipath covariance matrices when the channel is known at the receiver. These channels include multi-tap delay paths, as well as general channels with covariance matrices that cannot be written as a Kronecker product, such as dual-polarized antenna arrays with general correlations at both transmitter and receiver ends. The mathematical methods are formally valid for large antenna numbers, in which limit it is shown that all higher cumulant moments of the distribution, other than the first two scale to zero. Thus, it is confirmed that the distribution of the mutual information tends to a Gaussian, which enables one to calculate the outage capacity. These results are quite accurate even in the case of a few antennas, which makes this approach applicable to realistic situations.

Abstract. Consider a N × n random matrix Yn = (Y n ij) where the entries are given by Y n σij(n) ij = √ X n n ij, the Xn ij being centered, independent and identically distributed random variables with unit variance and (σij(n); 1 ≤ i ≤ N,1 ≤ j ≤ n) being an array of numbers we shall refer to as a variance profile. We study in this article the fluctuations of the random variable log det (YnY ∗ n + ρIN) where Y ∗ is the Hermitian adjoint of Y and ρ> 0 is an additional parameter. We prove that when centered and properly rescaled, this random variable satisfies a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) and has a Gaussian limit whose parameters are identified. A complete description of the scaling parameter is given; in particular it is shown that an additional term appears in this parameter in the case where the 4 th moment of the Xij’s differs from the 4 th moment of a Gaussian random variable. Such a CLT is of interest in the field of wireless communications. Key words and phrases: Random Matrix, empirical distribution of the eigenvalues, Stieltjes

The large spectral efficiencies promised for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless fading channels are derived under certain conditions which do not fully take into account the spatial aspects of the channel. Spatial correlation, due to limited angular spread or insufficient antenna spacing, significantly reduces the performance of MIMO systems. In this paper we explore the effects of spatially selective channels on the capacity of MIMO systems via a new capacity expression which is more general and realistic than previous expressions. By including spatial information we derive a closed-form expression for ergodic capacity which uses the physics of signal propagation combined with the statistics of the scattering environment. This expression gives the capacity of a MIMO system in terms of antenna placement and scattering environment and leads to valuable insights into the factors determining capacity for a wide range of scattering models.
