The purpose of this paper is to set up a theory of generalized operads and multicategories and to use it as a language in which to propose a definition of weak ncategory. Included is a full explanation of why the proposed definition of ncategory is a reasonable one, and of what happens when n <= 2. Generalized operads and multicategories play other parts in higherdimensional algebra too, some of which are outlined here: for instance, they can be used to simplify the opetopic approach to ncategories expounded by Baez, Dolan and others, and are a natural language in which to discuss enrichment of categorical structures.

We combine the principles of the FloydWarshallKleene algorithm, enriched categories, and Birkhoff arithmetic, to yield a useful class of algebras of transitive vertexlabeled spaces. The motivating application is a uniform theory of abstract or parametrized time in which to any given notion of time there corresponds an algebra of concurrent behaviors and their operations, always the same operations but interpreted automatically and appropriately for that notion of time. We study the different guises of the projective objects in Cocont(Q): they are the “completely distributive ” cocomplete Qcategories (the left adjoint to the Yoneda embedding admits a further left adjoint); equivalently, they are the “totally continuous ” cocomplete Qcategories (every object is the supremum of the presheaf of objects “totally below ” it); and also are they the Qcategories of regular presheaves on a regular Qsemicategory. As a particular case, the Qcategories of presheaves on a Qcategory are precisely the “totally algebraic” cocomplete Qcategories (every object is the supremum of the “totally compact” objects below it). We think that these results should be part of a yettobeunderstood “quantaloidenriched domain theory”. 1

Abstract A useful general concept of bialgebroid seems to be resolving itself in recent publications; we give a treatment in terms of modules and enriched categories. Generalizing this concept, we define the term &quot;quantum category&quot;in a braided monoidal category with equalizers distributed over by tensoring with an object. The definition of antipode for a bialgebroid is less resolved in the literature. Our suggestion is that the kind of dualization occurring in Barr's starautonomous categories is more suitable than autonomy ( = compactness = rigidity). This leads to our definition of quantum groupoid intended as a &quot;Hopf algebra with several objects&quot;. 1.

For a symmetric monoidalclosed category V and a suitable monad T on the category of sets, we introduce the notion of reflexive and transitive (T , V)algebra and show that various old and new structures are instances of such algebras. Lawvere's presentation of a metric space as a Vcategory is included in our setting, via the BettiCarboniStreetWalters interpretation of a Vcategory as a monad in the bicategory of Vmatrices, and so are Barr's presentation of topological spaces as lax algebras, Lowen's approach spaces, and Lambek's multicategories, which enjoy renewed interest in the study of ncategories. As a further example, we introduce a new structure called ultracategory which simultaneously generalizes the notions of topological space and of category.

In models of concurrent processes constraints on the order of events are often represented by partial orders, and schedules of events are then defined using an algebra of standard operations such as sequential and parallel composition. In this dissertation the notion of partial order is replaced by that of a set with a metric which takes values in a given ordered monoid. Partial orders are the simple case of a monoid whose two elements represent the presence or absence of a constraint. An ordered monoid can be seen as a monoidal category, and schedules based on it are categories enriched in the monoid. Algebraic operations on schedules can then be defined as constructions in the category of schedules. These definitions rely on certain properties of a category of schedules, such as closure and completeness. To simplify proofs of these properties, two constructions are defined. The paper is in essence a survey of categories having φweighted colimits for all the weights φ in some class Φ. We introduce the class Φ + of Φflat weights which are those ψ for which ψcolimits commute in the base V with limits having weights in Φ; and the class Φ − of Φatomic weights, which are those ψ for which ψlimits commute in the base V with colimits having weights in Φ. We show that both these classes are saturated (that is, what was called closed in the terminology of [AK88]). We prove that for the class P of all weights, the classes P + and P − both coincide with the class Q of absolute weights. For any class Φ and any category A, we have the free Φcocompletion Φ(A) of A; and we recognize Q(A) as the Cauchycompletion of A. We study the equivalence between (Q(A op)) op and Q(A), which we exhibit as the restriction of the Isbell adjunction between [A, V] op and [A op, V] when A is small; and we give a new Morita theorem for any class Φ containing Q. We end with the study of Φcontinuous weights and their relation to the Φflat weights. 1
