T his book is testament to the wonderful advances that have been achieved in the last few years in the!eld of prospective memory (PM1) research. However this is still a very new area of study. Also relatively new are the methods in cognitive neuroscience that enable us to localize the neural underpin-nings of speci!c behavioral functions. So one might expect, at this early scienti!c stage, that the evidence that links particular brain regions to PM might be some-what contradictory. Very surprisingly, however, this is not the case, at least for the frontal lobes. There is a general consensus that the executive functions of the frontal lobes play some part in supporting PM. This comes both from evidence of structural abnormality in the frontal lobes in people with an acquired PM de!cit (e.g., Fortin, Godbout, & Braum, 2003) or through studies linking executive pro-cessing with PM performance (e.g., Kliegel, Eschen, & Thone-Otto, 2004; Knight,

Everyday memory 2 Everyday memory 3 „Everyday memory ‟ is conceptualised as memory within the context of day-to-day life and, despite its functional relevance, anecdotal evidence suggests it may be impaired in individuals with has been little studied in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In the first study of its kind, 94 adolescents with an ASD and 55 without an ASD completed measures of everyday memory from the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT) and a standard word recall task (Children‟s Auditory Verbal Learning Test-2: CAVLT-2). The ASD group showed significant impairments on the RBMT, including in prospective memory, alongside impaired performance on the CAVLT-2. Social and communication ability was significantly associated with prospective spontaneous remembering in an everyday memory context but not with the CAVLT-2. The complex nature of everyday memory and its

Abstract Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a heteroge-neous condition characterized by the presence in an otherwise healthy elderly individual of cognitive deficits involving specific domains in the absence of significant functional impairments. Reports indicate that prospective memory (PM), that is, the ability to remember to execute delayed intentions, is impaired in individuals with MCI. The present review discusses the current debate in the literature on PM functioning in MCI by focusing on the relationship between prospective retrieval and retrospective memory functioning. Analysis of the reported evidence revealed that both the prospective component and the retrospective component of PM can be impaired in MCI. Declarative memory dysfunction may account for the retrospective memory impairment, while either reduced executive abilities or a deficit of reflexive mechanisms could explain the prospective component impairment.

Abstract. Objectives: To assess the sensitivity of patients who suffered a severe closed-head injury to the manipulation of attentional resources and encoding instructions during the execution of prospective memory tasks. Material and Methods: A group of patients with chronic sequelae of severe closed-head injury and a group of matched normal controls were given an experimental procedure for the assessment of time-based and event-based prospective memory. Availability of attentional resources at the time of intention recall and encoding conditions at the time of giving instructions were varied across experimental sessions. Results: The simultaneous execution of a concurrent task was more detrimental to accuracy in the spontaneous recall of the prospective intention in the post-traumatic than in the normal control group. Moreover, the instruction to encode more extensively by rehearsing aloud and mentally imaging the actions to be performed at the time of the study improved recall accuracy more in the post-traumatic than in the normal control group. Conclusions: Based on these data, we suggest that a prospective memory deficit in post-traumatic patients is due, among other things, to reduced availability of attentional resources and to poor encoding of actions to be performed.
