Unusually extensive networks of vocal recognition in African elephants
- Anim. Behav
, 2000
"... Research on acoustic communication has often focused on signalling between territorial individuals or static neighbouring groups. Under these circumstances, receivers have the opportunity to learn to recognize the signals only of the limited number of conspecifics with which they are in auditory con ..."

with the contact calls of a mean of 14 families in the population (containing around 100 adult females in total), in order to perform these discriminations. Female elephants thus appear to have unusually extensive networks of vocal recognition, which may prove to be typical of long-lived species that have both
UCSF Chimera—a visualization system for exploratory research and analysis
- J. Comput. Chem
, 2004
"... Abstract: The design, implementation, and capabilities of an extensible visualization system, UCSF Chimera, are discussed. Chimera is segmented into a core that provides basic services and visualization, and extensions that provide most higher level functionality. This architecture ensures that the ..."

that the extension mechanism satisfies the demands of outside developers who wish to incorporate new features. Two unusual extensions are presented: Multiscale, which adds the ability to visualize large-scale molecular assemblies such as viral coats, and Collaboratory, which allows researchers to share a Chimera
Primary jugular foramen meningioma with unusual extensive bone destruction: case report and review of literature
"... Jugular foramen meningiomas are exceedingly rare tumors of the fossa jugularis. These meningiomas are characterized by an invasive growth pattern with extensive skull base infi ltraskull base infi ltraskull base infiltration in all directions and by the mixed permeative-sclerotic appearance of the ..."

of the bone margins of the jugular foramen. We report an unusual case of a primary jugular foramen meningioma in a 30-year-old woman. The unenhanced highresolution CT of the temporal bones revealed extensive bone destruction around the left jugular foramen as well as bone destruction of the basilar part

Using Programmer-Written Compiler Extensions to Catch Security Holes
"... This paper shows how system-specific static analysis can nd security errors that violate rules such as "integers from untrusted sources must be sanitized before use" and "do not dereference user-supplied pointers." In our approach, programmers write system-specific extensions tha ..."

Dynamic Class Loading in the Java Virtual Machine
- In Proc. 13th ACM Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages, and Applications (OOPSLA'98), volume 33, number 10 of ACM SIGPLAN Notices
, 1998
"... Class loaders are a powerful mechanism for dynamically loading software components on the Java platform. They are unusual in supporting all of the following features: laziness, type-safe linkage, user-defined extensibility, and multiple communicating namespaces. We present the notion of class loade ..."

Parallel Programming in Split-C
- In Proceedings of Supercomputing '93
, 1993
"... We introduce the Split-C language, a parallel extension of C intended for high performance programming on distributed memory multiprocessors, and demonstrate the use of the language in optimizing parallel programs. Split-C provides a global address space with a clear concept of locality and unusual ..."

A ganglion cyst is a soft mass that is surrounded by a dense connective-tissue capsule. The capsule is filled with a viscous fluid that is rich in hyaluronic acid and other mucopolysaccharides. Although ganglion cysts are rarely found around the knee, they have been reported in associ-ation with the joint capsule of the knee or the menisci and close to the peroneal tendons23’5. We are reporting the case of a patient in whom an intra-articular ganglion cyst of the knee apparently arose from the posterior cruciate ligament and involved the lateral aspect of the medial femoral con-dyle. Case Report A twelve-year-old boy had a two-month history of pain and effusion in the left knee when he was seen in our orthopaedic clinic. He had been seen by a pediatrician one year earlier for similar complaints, but the
Principal Direction Divisive Partitioning
- Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery
, 1997

We propose a new algorithm capable of partitioning a set of documents or other samples based on an embedding in a high dimensional Euclidean space (i.e. in which every document is a vector of real numbers). The method is unusual in that it is divisive, as opposed to agglomerative, and operates by re ..."

Nasopharyngeal Extension of Glomus Tympanicum: An Unusual Clinical and Imaging Manifestation
"... SUMMARY: Nasopharyngeal extension of the glomus tympanicum is rare. Only 2 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We present a reported case of a large nasopharyngeal extension of recurrent glomus tympanicum, with various kinds of imaging and histopathology and a review of the literatur ..."
