Speech vs. Touch-tone: Telephony Interfaces for Information Access by Low Literate Users

by n.n. , 2008
"... Information access by low literate users is a hard problem. Critical information, such as in the field of healthcare, can often mean the difference between life and death. In our research, we have developed and tested various spoken language interface prototypes with low literate community health w ..."

worker. In this paper, we present results from our research that show that well-designed speech interfaces are preferable to touch-tone equivalents. Additionally, we show that it is especially important to localize the system’s spoken language output for low literate users.

Improving Navigation in Touch-Tone Interfaces

by Peer M. Shajahan, Pourang P. Irani
"... In this paper we describe a system we have developed for improving navigation in touch-tone applications by personalizing the menu interface. Telephony applications rely heavily on hierarchically structured menus (or prompts) for creating a dialog between the user and the information being retrieved ..."

Curing the menu blues in touch-tone voice interfaces

by Bernhard Suhm, Barbara Freeman, David Getty - ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (Extended Abstracts , 2001
"... This paper presents a study on touch-tone menu design. In particular, we investigated whether short or long menus route callers more efficiently to the destination that can handle the call. A short menu offers a small number of broad selections, while a long menu offers a larger number of more speci ..."

Telephony

by Melanie D. Polkosky, James R. Lewis , 2001
"... ii We investigated the effect of system response time (SRT) duration and rate of change of a system processing tone on participants ’ subjective time estimates and affect. Sixteen participants (balanced for gender and age) estimated SRT while listening to silence or ticking tones of varying rates. P ..."

Programming internet telephony services

by Jonathan Rosenberg, Jonathan Lennox, Henning Schulzrinne - IEEE Network , 1999
"... Internet telephony enables a wealth of new service possibilities. Traditional telephony services, such as call forwarding, transfer, and 800 number services can be enhanced by interaction with email, web, and directory services. Additional media types, like video and interactive chat, can be added a ..."

Multiple interfaces, examples from telephony

by Lill Kristiansen
"... We study the use of multiple terminals and many users in the context of ‘calling to a home or family’. We use observed practices to enhance the published P3 framework by Jones et al. with some new concepts. Persons, roles, groups, places, mobility and activities are looked into, as well as some busi ..."

Services for internet telephony

by Jonathan Michael Lennox , 2004
"... Internet telephony — voice transmission and call signalling over IP networks — can pro-vide services far beyond those of the circuit-switched telephone network. This thesis discusses Internet telephony services in four broad areas: user-location services; multi-party conferenc-ing; the interworking ..."

of Internet telephony and mobile telephony; and Internet telephony feature interaction. User-location services are services which modify how a telephony server locates a user. Service authors need a way to control this process; this thesis presents two of them. The SIP Common Gateway Interface (SIP CGI) is a

Open Charging and QoS Interfaces for IP Telephony

by Burkhard Stiller, George Fankhauser, Gabriela Joller, Peter Reichl, Nathalie Weiler - Technology Track 4, Session on IP Audio , 1999
"... IP (Internet Protocol) Telephony requires the support of guaranteed services and charging to provide a valuable service for potential customers. It has to be considered carefully, that the quality of long-distance telephony calls via the Internet is heavily affected by the load of the links which th ..."

in the Internet, there must be the right incentive for any user to choose the traffic class which optimally fits his requirements and will be the most efficient one in terms of prices to be payed. Therefore, the integration of charging and Quality-of-Service (QoS) interfaces for IP telephony are important

Abstract On Avoiding Mode Confusions in the Telephony User Interface ⋆

by unknown authors
