Understanding relationships using copulas

by Emiliano A. Valdez - North American Actuarial Journal , 1998
"... This article introduces actuaries to the concept of "copulas, " a tool for understanding relationships among multivariate outcomes. A copula is a function that links univariate marginals to their full multivariate distribution. Copulas were introduced in 1959 in the context of prob ..."

properties of copulas, their relationships to measures of dependence and several families of copulas that have appeared in the literature. An annotated bibliography provides a resource for researchers and practitioners who wish to continue their study of copulas. This article will also be useful to those who

Generalized linear mixed models: a practical guide for ecology and evolution.

by Benjamin M Bolker , Mollie E Brooks , Connie J Clark , Shane W Geange , John R Poulsen , M Henry , H Stevens , Jada-Simone S White - Trends in Ecology and Evolution, , 2009
"... How should ecologists and evolutionary biologists analyze nonnormal data that involve random effects? Nonnormal data such as counts or proportions often defy classical statistical procedures. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) provide a more flexible approach for analyzing nonnormal data when ..."

random effects are present. The explosion of research on GLMMs in the last decade has generated considerable uncertainty for practitioners in ecology and evolution. Despite the availability of accurate techniques for estimating GLMM parameters in simple cases, complex GLMMs are challenging to fit

Composable Controllers for Physics-Based Character Animation

by Petros Faloutsos , Michiel van de Panne, Demetri Terzopoulos , 2001
"... An ambitious goal in the area of physics-based computer animation is the creation of virtual actors that autonomously synthesize realistic human motions and possess a broad repertoire of lifelike motor skills. To this end, the control of dynamic, anthropomorphic figures subject to gravity and contac ..."

to function properly. We demonstrate controller composition with pre-conditions determined not only manually, but also automatically based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) learning theory. We evaluate our composition framework using a family of controllers capable of synthesizing basic actions such as balance

Decomposition Procedures for Distributional Analysis: A Unified Framework Based on the Shapley Value

by Anthony F. Shorrocks , 1999
"... Decomposition techniques are used in many fields of economics to help disentangle and quantify the impact of various causal factors. Their use is particularly widespread in studies of poverty and inequality. In poverty analysis, most practitioners now employ decomposable poverty measures — especiall ..."

Fostering resiliency in kids: Protective factors in the family

by Bonnie Benard , Minnesota St Paul - ERIC/CUE Digest, Number 126 , 1991
"... Ed. This book is available for purchase from the West Ed website. These two publications remain the most comprehensive, user-friendly summary of resilience research designed specifically for community based helping professionals. Benard continues to be the leading author bridging the gap between re ..."

Bonnie's early publications have stuck in my mind. They were seminal; they were laboriously created to synthesize important research for lay prevention practitioners who were trying to find successful ways of reducing and eliminating youth substance abuse. Most of these professionals were tired

We try to publish authors ’ responses in the same edition with readers ’ comments. Time constraints might prevent this in some cases. The problem is compounded in a bimonthly journal where continu-ity of comment and redress are difficult to achieve. When the redress appears 2 months after the com-ment, 4 months will have passed since the article was published. Therefore, we would suggest to our read-ers that their correspondence about published pa-pers be submitted as soon as possible after the article appears. Haste in Starting Therapy for Depression To the Editor: The article titled “Depression Treatment in Primary Care ” by Robinson et al1 is very well written and comprehensively scores the need to reassess the type of therapy offered. Having gone through the article, we are impelled to write a few of our observations, in the hope that we might contribute to the research on treat-ment of the geriatric population. Is there a haste involved in starting the therapy for depression, especially in the geriatric population? There should be a need to reflect why less than 5 % of the patients were grouped into the “watchful waiting ” and “support group ” categories.1 Moreover, for the geriatric age group, multifaceted interventions and principles of collaborative care result in best outcomes.1,2 Were the patients given a choice or was it that the interplay of the capacity to pay and the type of insurance held that had determined the modality of treatment. We propose in-trospection by the readers on the above issues, in the backdrop of a research finding expressing the preference of geriatric patients for psychological interventions.3
