Optimal foraging in semantic memory

by Thomas T. Hills, Peter M. Todd, Michael N. Jones - Psychological Review , 2012
"... When searching for items in memory, people explore internal representations in much the same way that animals forage in space. Results from a number of fields support this notion at a deeper level of evolutionary homology, with evidence that goal-directed cognition is an evolutionary descendent of a ..."

types of animals from memory as they could in 3 minutes. Clusters or patches of these items, along with their semantic similarity and frequency, were found with an automatic Wikipedia corpus analysis using the BEAGLE semantic memory model (Jones & Mewhort, 2007), and via hand-coded category

ISSUES IN SEMANTIC MEMORY:

by Edward J. Shoben, Lance J. Rips, Edward E. Smith, The Nations, Edward J. Shoben, Lance J. Rips, Edward E. Smith , 1978
"... Glass and Holyoak (1975) have raised two issues related to the distinction between set-theoretic and network theories of semantic memory. They contend that: (a) their version of a network theory, the Marker Search model, is conceptually and empirically superior to our version of a set-theoretic theo ..."

A theory of memory retrieval

by Roger Ratcliff - PSYCHOL. REV , 1978
"... A theory of memory retrieval is developed and is shown to apply over a range of experimental paradigms. Access to memory traces is viewed in terms of a resonance metaphor. The probe item evokes the search set on the basis of probe-memory item relatedness, just as a ringing tuning fork evokes sympath ..."

) and to speed-accuracy paradigms; results are found to provide a basis for comparison of these paradigms. It is noted that neural network models can be interfaced to the retrieval theory with little difficulty and that semantic memory models may benefit from such a retrieval scheme.

Semantic priming and retrieval from lexical memory: Evidence for facilitatory and inhibitory processes

by James H. Neely - Memory & Cognition
"... Prior to each visually presented target letter string in a speeded word-nonword classification task, either BIRD, BODY, BUILDING, or xxx appeared as a priming event. When the target was a word, it was (a) a name of a type of bird on most BiRD-prime trials; (b) a name of part of a building on most BO ..."

Prior to each visually presented target letter string in a speeded word-nonword classification task, either BIRD, BODY, BUILDING, or xxx appeared as a priming event. When the target was a word, it was (a) a name of a type of bird on most BiRD-prime trials; (b) a name of part of a building on most BODY-prime trials; (c) a name of a part of the body on most BUiLDiNG-prime trials; (d) a name of a type of bird, part of a building, or part of the body equally often on xxx-prime trials. Thus, on BiRD-prime trials the subject expected the word target to be chosen

On the Relation between Episodic and Semantic Memories

by Rutvik Desai, I. Introdcution , 1997
"... ?" In the next section, I try to define and clarify the distinction between episodic and semantic memories. In section III, some issues regarding the distinction are discussed. In section IV, I propose a brain-imaging experiment to examine the neural correlates of episodic and semantic memories ..."
