Abstract: Early Internet applications were written using a classic client/server model, with multiple content pages refreshed for each user action. As users continue to demand more sophisticated and increasingly interactive Internet programming, applications development is evolving to permit more efficient communication between clients and servers. Techniques such as Ajax are being used to promote this new style of Internet programming. Rich Internet Applications (RIA) offer greatly enhanced usability, and allow Internet programs to rival their desktop counterparts for functionality. This paper explores technologies deployed in creating RIA, and considers relative merits and limitations of this new style of application development.

Heading for a largely improved interface between individuals and electronics this paper presents enabling technologies for the integration of electronics into textile fabrics. For the realization of ‘wearable electronics ’ we discuss a packaging and interconnect technology, a silicon-based micro-machined thermoelectric generator chip for energy harvesting from body heat, and an interwoven antenna concept for textile RF ID labels. We have been developing a system for comparing multiple genomes, PLATCOM, where users can choose genomes of their choice freely and perform analysis of the selected genomes with a suite of computational tools. PLATCOM is built on internal databases such as GenBank, COG, KEGG, and Pairwise Comparison Database (PCDB) that contains all pairwise comparisons (97,034 entries) of protein sequence files (.faa) and whole genome sequence files (.fna) of 312 replicons. ver the past thirty years, constituency organizing, also called separate or self-organizing, has brought together members of equity-seeking groups to strengthen their voices, skills, self-confidence and political power. Such self-organizing highlights the significance of social identities, builds community, and supports collective action. It is expressed organizationally in formal committees and caucuses, sometimes mandated by union constitutions. In the current context, the various separate committees and caucuses-- representing women, people of colour, Aboriginal peoples, people with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered peoples-- need to invent new political and organizational ways to work collectively and collaboratively. The idea of a "Caucus of Caucuses", a singular thread picked up in a variety of sessions at the conference on Advancing the Union Equity Agenda sponsored by the Centre for Research on Work and Society (York University) in March 2005, is one such strategy.
