Learning Structural SVMs with Latent Variables

by Chun-nam John Yu, Thorsten Joachims

The Theoretical Status of Latent Variables

by Denny Borsboom, Gideon J. Mellenbergh, Jaap Van Heerden - Psychological Review , 2003
"... This article examines the theoretical status of latent variables as used in modern test theory models. First, it is argued that a consistent interpretation of such models requires a realist ontology for latent variables. Second, the relation between latent variables and their indicators is discussed ..."

with Latent Variables

by Shigeo Tatsuki, Haruo Hayashi, Doracie B. Zoleta-nantes, Michiko Banba, Koichi Hasegawa, Keiko Tamura
"... ABSTRACT: This paper builds and examines a model that predicts personal risk aversive behaviors against possible earthquake disasters using social survey data collected from 1,000 Marikina city residents. By incorporating Fishbein and Ajzen (1975) model of reasoned action and Neisser’s (1978) model ..."

The unity and diversity of executive functions and their contributions to complex “Frontal Lobe” tasks: a latent variable analysis

by Akira Miyake, Naomi P. Friedman, Michael J. Emerson, Alexander H. Witzki, Amy Howerter, Tor D. Wager - COGNIT PSYCHOL , 2000
"... This individual differences study examined the separability of three often postulated executive functions—mental set shifting ("Shifting"), information updating and monitoring ("Updating"), and inhibition of prepotent responses ("Inhibition")—and their roles in complex ..."

This individual differences study examined the separability of three often postulated executive functions—mental set shifting ("Shifting"), information updating and monitoring ("Updating"), and inhibition of prepotent responses ("Inhibition")—and their roles in complex "frontal lobe" or "executive" tasks. One hundred thirty-seven college students performed a set of relatively simple experimental tasks that are considered to predominantly tap each target executive function as well as a set of frequently used executive tasks: the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Tower of Hanoi (TOH), random number generation (RNG), operation span, and dual tasking. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the three target executive functions are moderately correlated with one another, but are clearly separable. Moreover, structural equation modeling suggested that the three functions

Latent variable models

by Christopher M. Bishop - Learning in Graphical Models , 1999
"... Abstract. A powerful approach to probabilistic modelling involves supplementing a set of observed variables with additional latent, or hidden, variables. By defining a joint distribution over visible and latent variables, the corresponding distribution of the observed variables is then obtained by m ..."

Democracy as a latent variable

by Shawn Treier, Simon Jackman - American Journal of Political Science , 2008
"... Measurement is critical to the social scientific enterprise. Many key concepts in social-scientific theories are not observed directly, and researchers rely on assumptions (tacitly or explicitly, via formal measurement models) to operationalize these concepts in empirical work. In this paper we appl ..."

We show how tobetter exploit the information in thePolity data set so as to produce amore reliable scale measure (or classification) of democracy. Our modeling approaches also let us assess the ‘‘noise’ ’ (measurement
