support of the Rockefeller Foundation. The Rockefeller Foundation fosters innovative solutions to many of the world’s most pressing challenges, affirming its mission, since 1913, to “promote the well-being ” of humanity. Today, the Foundation works to ensure that more people can tap into the benefits of globalization while strengthening resilience to its risks. Foundation initiatives include efforts to mobilize an agricultural revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa, bolster economic security for American workers, inform equitable, sustainable transportation policies in the United States, ensure access to affordable and high-quality health systems in developing countries, accelerate the impact investing industry’s evolution, and develop strategies and services that help vulnerable communities cope with the impacts of climate change. There has been an ever-growing interest in the polar regions in recent years because of concerns about amplification of anthropogenic climate change. Furthermore, increased economic and transportation activities in polar regions are leading to more demands for sustained and improved availability of integrated observational and predictive weather, climate and water information to support decision-making. However, partly as a result of a strong emphasis of previous international efforts on lower and middle latitudes, many remaining gaps in weather, sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting in polar regions hamper reliable decision making. The aim of the WWRP Polar Prediction Project (WWRP-PPP) therefore is to “Promote cooperative international research enabling development of improved weather and environmental prediction services for the polar regions, on time scales from hourly to seasonal. ” This project constitutes the hourly to seasonal research component of the WMO Global Integrated Polar Prediction System (GIPPS). In order to meet growing demand for skilful and reliable predictions in polar regions and beyond the following eight key research goals were identified: 1) Understand and evaluate the use of enhanced prediction information and services in polar regions 2) Establish and apply verification methods appropriate for polar regions
